    30-40 miles equates to about half an hour's driving if you're pressing on, so I can see why fuel costs aren't a major concern. My grandson does more miles than that in his pedal car! I cover about 10 times that per week for work or leisure, and if I could cut that back to the mileages you do, I could comfortably run an AMG 63 or an American muscle car.

    Well I can dream!

    I stand by my comments about emissions regulations though. We'll just wait and see.

    You do know that a diesel takes longer to warm up, so by only driving 30 to 40 miles a week you are not doing your engine much good.

    With that kind of mileage I would have a big V8 on my drive and not a soot producing oil burner.
    I do about 30 miles a day and the diesel economy over petrol is marginal.

    Sure, Kevin, nothing's perfect. I do take it for a good run sometimes, to compensate for that, and it seems to be fine, as the car both goes like a bomb and is very reliable. Remember I've been doing that type of driving with it now for three years, and so far have experienced no problems.

    Yeah, sure, although all internal combustion engines produce soot, to some degree or other. The diesel aspect comes into its own when I take the car to Italy [the main reason why it was bought in the first place], where I can drive 1500-2000 miles, over the space of a 3-week holiday. Taking a big V8 on that type of journey, simply wouldn't be practical.

    That is exactly what a 'Grand Tourer' was supposed to be for? And they are always V8 or V12s.

    Don't get me wrong, sometimes I drive a lot more miles, especially at the weekend, if we decide to go for a long run into the country, for a day out and a nice meal. Some of our favourite haunts, in that respect, can involve a near 200-mile round trip!

    Shame you have to wait for "Mrs P" to go out, before you can play music loudly. My "Mrs P" is usually with me, jumping up and down to the Rammstein (one of her favourite bands), played (on the big system) at near 'gig' levels!!

    Indeed...if you're willing to fork out for the fuel bills. Count me out, as I don't consider it practical. I prefer my diesel version of a 'Grand Tourer', where if I keep it at around 70mph, I can get approximately 35-40 miles to the gallon, and that's with a 3.5L engine!

    If I fill the tank up full before I leave home, I can get all the way down to Dover, and well into France [also in complete comfort, as the engine is smooth and effortless], before having to fill up again. You could never do that in a big V8 or V12. You'd be lucky to get half of that mileage.

    My next car is likely to be a rechargeable hybrid.
    I will use battery power to go to and from work, and shorter trips at the weekend with the flexibility of an internal combustion engine for the longer trips. That will cut my fuel bill dramatically.
