I MUST trawl through the old mags hifi dave has and do some scans...

The 301 I think, has the better or more tolerant motor, which IIRC is better with mains voltage drifting than the 401. I also like the grey hammerite 301's, but the 401 in a window display (Tee Vee Sound in Hemel Hempstead in the mid 60's) was the very first proper HiFi grade deck I ever saw (where's the arm??? )

The 401 in original post is lovely - well done and I'm green

Oh yeah, the Tron ain't bad either...

My next TT project is well under way, GL75 with PTP toplate and RC plinth and 12" Jelco arm with Oyaide headshell fitted with a Benz cartridge, smashing.

Sounds good, dafteeee! Love Goldring idlers, but my fave is the GL99 (a far better T/T than the GL75, IMO):

    Observe the engineering quality:

Those things have an amazingly visceral and 'gutsy' sound, which I love!

I love these too, but I suppose the 401 overshadowed them

Te 301 and 401 appear to have been designed for 24/7 running non-stop and I suspect many broadcast ones were used just this way.

I'd have liked a grey 301 but ended up with a cream grease bearing one instead (no strobe), and I think it's better looking than the grey now (although mine needs repainting).

AFAIK the EMT arms use the old Ortofon A style headshell which has a shorter overhang and the pins are in a + rather than an X - so not sure it will fit.

Those long SME pattern headshells look a bit 'girly' to me anyway ;-)
