Exactly my thoughts.. were with EDF this year and they are constantly bombarding me with texts/emails to get their smart meter.

I even had some arsewipe ring me and insist that it was part of the terms of my contract. I told him to put it in writing that the thing would work with any other supplier and I d give it a thought. That letter never arrived...

I keep to a small group of friends, and that is exactly why. I’ll never forget a friend of a friend who suggested we all go out for pizza and drink a few beers! After the damage was done, he announced he didn’t have any money! And the rest of us were forced to pitch in to cover his part! And he wonders why he’s never invited?

Being generous always pays off, when you’re short others will offer to pay. And my good friend and I used to frequent this same Italian restaurant, and we always tipped the waitresses very well! We would walk in, and the waitresses would be fighting over who was going to wait on us! We got free food and drink all the time, and, thinking back, a few dates too!

My brother had this friend who, when we were out on a pub crawl, would always hang back upon entering the pub so he wouldn't be first at the bar. Or he'd nip to the bogs first. Anything he could do to make sure he got the last round. By the end of the night a considerable saving could be made doing this. Also when it was his round he got himself Fosters, everyone else's rounds and it was Stella. And if he got a takeaway afterwards, he'd eat half and save the other half for his tea tomorrow.

He was an accountant on 45k a year, and in the early nineties that was a fairly good wage.

He probably thought I was a right miserable git, but I couldn't stand to look at him, never mind speak to him
And in all that time you never gave him a slap, or told him a few home truths? I wonder *exactly* what breeds such behaviour - and I mean the very root cause of the meanness, when you're not short of money, not just folks trying to save a few quid who aren't particularly wealthy?

For me, such behaviour is more of an illness than a question of attitude. Quite simply, tightfisted people like that have something fundamentally wrong with them. Such outward displays of parsimony are not only very unattractive, but abnormal. It's different if you genuinely don't have much money, and so can't afford certain things, but then you don't put yourself into positions in public where you're unable to pay your way!

So no, I'd never socialise with "tightwads", as I have ZERO respect for them. It isn't cool, and it certainly isn't smart. Oh, and there's a big difference between thrifty/frugal, which I believe Martin's dad was being (in hard times), and outright MEAN....

So if you don't get to Cranage next weekend I shouldn't assume you're just trying to dodge buying anybody a beer?

Very simple - you say words, and my warped mind provides the illustrations! Don't be alarmed - there are dark corners of my mind that haven't been hoovered in years. There's nothing sinister there, just a lot of dust and fluff

    No problem Steve...

If I say words that gets your warped mind going I love it...
