Whenever the 'benefits' of something is rammed down our throats you just know that they are going to benefit more than us. Play hard to get for long enough and you will eventually get it for free. Then you can get your own back by repeatedly 'popping out' each time they are due to visit

We've had a smart meter for at least a couple of years, and I can't as I've noticed any reduction in our energy bills.

As the energy suppliers only give their best rates (or what are said to be their best rates) for "Brand New Customers Only" we are forced to change supplier every year. When they can supply a Meter that is compatible with all energy suppliers, then I might consider having one.

You don't need a "smart meter" to reduce you electricity bill. Any savings that might be gained are simply due to you being aware of the amount of electricity you use at any one time. I'm already aware of my consumption, and as I don't have a "smart meter" (and nor do I want one), I will simply the meter reading(s) by phone or via the supplier's on-line site if we are out of the house when the meter reader calls.

I have just have had my monthly payments reduced to the tune of £250 a year. And all without a "smart meter".

Yes, that's it with these smart meters - they don't save energy, they just show you how wasteful you are being. And anyone with half a brain knows you don't need to fill a kettle for one brew. Or leaving the front door open on a windy January day. This is probably why we're not making any savings, we are already pretty savvy with our usage

The first thing my father would do every night when he got in from work was turn the heating right down and switch all the lights off. And complain that it was all costing him money. That tends to sink in after a decade or so. I've been to people's houses though where they have the heating full on and all the windows open because it 'gets a bit stuffy' otherwise. I mean that's nuts.

The father of a friend of mine, having been told that the CRT of early colour TVs would have a limited lifetime if the picture was too bright, always watched with the brightness turned down to "murk-a-vision" levels.

Lol... I'm laughing (sort of), but not really, as I find such tightfistedness/meanness a rather odious trait, especially when those guilty can comfortably afford not to be that way! It's simply a mindset I can't relate to, as I'm the complete opposite, and generous to a fault towards those I like, especially close friends and family!

Me too, I can't be doing with tightwads.

My brother had this friend who, when we were out on a pub crawl, would always hang back upon entering the pub so he wouldn't be first at the bar. Or he'd nip to the bogs first. Anything he could do to make sure he got the last round. By the end of the night a considerable saving could be made doing this. Also when it was his round he got himself Fosters, everyone else's rounds and it was Stella. And if he got a takeaway afterwards, he'd eat half and save the other half for his tea tomorrow.

He was an accountant on 45k a year, and in the early nineties that was a fairly good wage.

He probably thought I was a right miserable git, but I couldn't stand to look at him, never mind speak to him

A colleague at work was (and no doubt still is) like that. Always hanging back, but we got around the problem by bluntly saying to him: "Well ----, why don't you start the first round by buying me a pint of ....". He couldn't get out of that.

I've got a 'friend' who does exactly the same and never buys a round....

Even if I had no money at all I'll still spend it... I'm not tight at all... (well not that way anyway!)...
