I agree. It's not like our ancestors benefited any from it. They were working 6 days a week in a mill or a pit or getting their arses shot off in some foreign shithole. Or dying of cholera because no-one had figured out that drinking water people had crapped in was bad for you. They might not have been having much fun in Wales, Scotland or Ireland but it wasn't a 24 party in England either for 99% of the population.

Being half Scottish, a quarter English and a quarter Irish I guess my ancestors oppressed each other. Though the quarter English ancestry is Northern, so maybe they were oppressed too.

My understanding is that the British Isles comprise England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland. But while English folk are happy to be called 'Brits'

Oh yeah, and one of them was my mate's older brother (actually the fella who got me interested in hi fi). He'd known me since I was fifteen, met most of my girlfriends, met my wife, and knew I had two young kids. His current partner was sat beside him the whole time. And did any of this put him off?

He spent most of the evening trying, probably thought that persistence (and beer) would eventually wear me down. It didn't. I made sure I left the pub before them, saying if I didn't get home soon my missus would be locking me out. Cue one last effort: "If you end up locked out you can come and stay at mine".

When I saw him a few days later he was suitably embarrassed, telling me how extremely pissed he was. The other blokes that have come on to me over the years have all been strangers, and that's ok, but this bloke was virtually family!
