ours are still all free. not sure the garden one will stay that way tho. tbh i really dont want the garden now as its way too big for my disability, but this is my home and getting a transfer to a slum neighbourhood doesnt excite me too much

“Nothing discloses real character like the use of power. It is easy for the weak to be gentle. Most people can bear adversity. But if you wish to know what a man really is, give him power. This is the supreme test. It is the glory of Lincoln that, having almost absolute power, he never abused it, except on the side of mercy".

“You see these dictators on their pedestals, surrounded by the bayonets of their soldiers and the truncheons of their police ... yet in their hearts there is unspoken fear. They are afraid of words and thoughts: words spoken abroad, thoughts stirring at home -- all the more powerful because forbidden -- terrify them. A little mouse of thought appears in the room, and even the mightiest potentates are thrown into panic.”

"You don't have free will. You have the appearance of free will.”

“There's a war out there, old friend. A world war. And it's not about who's got the most bullets. It's about who controls the information. What we see and hear, how we work, what we think... it's all about the information!”

Our first bin is free, provided by the council...if it goes missing, we have to pay for another one...even if it is stolen...total shite...councils are a law unto themselves..make a noise and the twats just become difficult and will not help you...I'd bet money, if your bin goes missing, you won't get a second one for nowt...apparently it's our responsibilty to look after the bin..If I get hold of the twats, who swiped it..I'll throttle them...

This may seem like more trouble than it's worth, but:

Call in at the council offices in person, and when the jobsworth refuses to help, wait outside for him to finish work. Then follow him home and nick his bin
I just dropped in, to see what condition my condition was in

Very good Steve..I like your train of thought...it's just some dopey pratt in the lane, who's taken in my bin by mistake..obviously blind as a bat...on a search of the lanes, there's a stray bin, which I've taken in for now...The bin men are lazy bastards...the lanes are quite narrow, so the wagon has difficulty navigating them...the bin men empty the bins and leave them at the end of the lane instead of putting them back outside our back gates.....

A TV advert for 'Verisure' alarm systems has driven me to revive this old thread It takes smugness to new heights, but I doubt their alarms will protect them from getting a slap from anyone who recognises them on the street

'There's always lots of break-ins over the holidays, we should get one before we go away.'

yes so it can start going off for no reason ten minutes after you leave for the airport and carry on for days until finally someone comes along with a ladder and a hammer and smashes the bastard thing off the wall.

What is wrong with asking the neighbours to keep an eye on the place whilst you are away? Such as picking up the mail and putting it somewhere it cannot be seen etc.

We always notify our immediate neighbours when we go away.

Indeed - there's a lot to be said for the old-fashioned way!

One of our neighbours even looks after out cats while we're on holiday, and comes to feed them everyday, plus checks on the house, and we return the compliment when he's away. It's called socialising with people in the REAL world and making REAL friends, rather than needing to rely on tech.

The problem nowadays is that no bugger talks to anyone anymore - everyone lives in their own little 'bubble', conducting their 'plastic lives', virtually, so they won't even know their neighbours, as they'll be too busy counting their 'followers' on Instagram or other imaginary 'friends' on Facebook!

Try asking any of them to look after your house

We know everyone in our grove and most share 'away' dates, works very well.
I love Hendrix for so many reasons. He was so much more than just a blues guitarist - he played damn well any kind of guitar he wanted. In fact I'm not sure if he even played the guitar - he played music. - Stevie Ray Vaughan
