    Default Hifi Resurrection

Here's my current bits and pieces - an early Michell Gyrodec , Alphason HR100S-MCS and Ortofon MC-3 Turbo that used to belong to my Dad, together with my Monitor Audio RS6 speakers. The Gyrodec motor had seized, but after repair it's now working great and it's wonderful to play some vinyl again -

Apologies for the dust and phone pics !

Yes they are - I think they're still the original valves...

It was modded by Audio Innovations many years ago to run in triode mode, though I confess I have no idea quite what that means !

I should probably think about getting it serviced sometime, as I don't think it's ever been looked at since the mod was done..

The Audio Innovations 500 is an excellent amplifier.

How many watts do you get out of it with the EL34s wired as triodes?

I'm afraid I've no idea ! But it comfortably drives the MA RS 6's as loud as I could ever want . Originally it was paired with Snell Type J's, but they got replaced as the driver surrounds failed..

25 watts Class A drops to about 15 watts if I recall right but it might be less again.

It does give a purer more delicate and slightly more open sound but at the loss of a lot of drive and some weight and scale.

The Series 500 looks like a mk2 but it might be a first version, close up photo and back will tell the tale.

Conversation to triode operation takes the standard Ultra Linear Push Pull windings of the ouput transformers, five tappings, and commons together the three grid tappings into one, making the valves operate in triode (3) instead of pentode (5) mode. It drops the power significantly, likely below 10 Watts, but 10 W of triode coupled valve power is a STRONG 10 W..!!..
