"This is my first review of a JL Audio subwoofer, which is odd because the brand's subs have received raves from the audiophile press for 10 years. The wait was absolutely worth it!"

"If I had to sum up the e110's sound in one word it would be precise. Bass notes start and stop on a dime, drum beats sound like sticks hitting a drum head. Most subs sound slower and less distinct, the e110 totally transformed the sound of my Zu Druid V tower speakers. The sound now has weight and gravitas that the Druid V never achieved on its own. The E-Sub subwoofer driver features a radical, deep architecture designed to create a highly linear, mechanical action and a motor design with enough linear excursion to handle the challenging program material.

A totally new switching amplifier was engineered for the E-Subs, with a compact and efficient switching power supply. This design allows us to keep the E-Sub's dimensions compact while delivering ample clean power that will fully exercise the drivers' excursion ranges.

The E-Sub's feature set has been designed to allow the use of E-Subs in a wide range of applications, from full home theater systems to dedicated two-channel music systems, to desktop audio workstations. A true, two-way onboard crossover with high-pass line outputs allows the E-Sub to integrate seamlessly with two-channel systems, and high-level inputs even make it possible to add an E-Sub to systems lacking line outputs. Polarity and variable phase controls make it possible to precisely blend the E-Sub's output with that of your main speakers.

CR-1 is built around two banks of precision Linkwitz-Riley low-pass and high-pass filters. Multiplying DACs with monolithic ratio matching are employed to adjust the analogue circuit's filter frequencies. This offers superior tracking behaviour and far more precise left/right channel balance, compared to conventional approaches.

Another of CR-1's unique and powerful features is a pair of rotary controls that control the damping of each filter bank. These damping controls dramatically improve the acoustic summing through the crossover region, by compensating for each speaker system's frequency response. At the center of the front panel, a single intuitive, rotary control permits quick adjustment of the relative level between the subwoofer(s) and main speakers.

To minimize distortion and noise, CR-1 employs top-grade component parts in its all-analogue audio circuitry: 1% precision resistors, JFET-input audio-grade op-amps, polypropylene film-and-foil capacitors and metallized-polypropylene film capacitors, to name just a few. We also build CR-1 right here in the U.S.A., to ensure top quality and dependability.

CR-1's input-output design makes it equally adaptable to studio, mastering suite or audiophile two-channel playback environments. To accommodate dual-mode systems, we also include a bypass feature that engages a pass-through from a dedicated "Managed Bass Input" on the rear panel, to the CR-1's subwoofer outputs. This makes it convenient to switch from two-channel to multi-channel mode.

"Let’s start by talking about the driver. This E-Sub E-112 sub is a sealed design with a custom-built long-throw 12″ driver. The most obvious peculiarity is in the driver’s depth. This massive driver nearly fills up the cabinet due to its deep motor structure. There are several reasons for this depth: First, the motor structure is designed to support the driver’s substantial 2-1/2″ peak-to-peak excursion with excellent linearity. Another reason is that the depth allows for the dual spiders which are spaced 6″ apart. The additional spider prevents twisting of the voice coil under the demanding acceleration-induced forces that come into play at higher SPL’s or during quick transients."

"In the stages where the metamorphosis was really taking hold, the wholeness of the bass sent chills up and down my spine with every beat of the black swan’s wings."

"The main deal here is that 12” driver. I was told that JLA spent lots of time and effort engineering a woofer that could match the 3” peak-to-peak excursion of their W7-series woofers."

In fact, I wouldn’t hesitate to dial back the crossover to 40Hz and use the e112 with three-way floorstanding speakers with greater bass capabilities than the Magico S1’s. I think the e112 would still be quite a plus."

"To test the e112 in this respect, I chose Jack Johnson and Friends’ Sing-A-Longs and Lullabies for the Film Curious George (16/44.1 AIFF, Universal). The song “The 3 R’s” begins with a deep, tight kick drum that satisfies my inner need for bass impact. I listened to this track at peaks of about 95dB (at the listening position), and the tapestry of the music held together just perfectly. CR-1 is built around two banks of precision Linkwitz-Riley low-pass and high-pass filters. Multiplying DACs with monolithic ratio matching are employed to adjust the analogue circuit's filter frequencies. This offers superior tracking behaviour and far more precise left/right channel balance, compared to conventional approaches.

Another of CR-1's unique and powerful features is a pair of rotary controls that control the damping of each filter bank. These damping controls dramatically improve the acoustic summing through the crossover region, by compensating for each speaker system's frequency response. At the center of the front panel, a single intuitive, rotary control permits quick adjustment of the relative level between the subwoofer(s) and main speakers.

To minimize distortion and noise, CR-1 employs top-grade component parts in its all-analogue audio circuitry: 1% precision resistors, JFET-input audio-grade op-amps, polypropylene film-and-foil capacitors and metallized-polypropylene film capacitors, to name just a few. We also build CR-1 right here in the U.S.A., to ensure top quality and dependability.

CR-1's input-output design makes it equally adaptable to studio, mastering suite or audiophile two-channel playback environments. To accommodate dual-mode systems, we also include a bypass feature that engages a pass-through from a dedicated "Managed Bass Input" on the rear panel, to the CR-1's subwoofer outputs. This makes it convenient to switch from two-channel to multi-channel mode.

A very complete set of signal processing features is easily accessible on the top surface of the Gotham v2. These include a highly flexible low-pass filter, variable phase, switchable polarity, e.l.f. trim and our powerful Digital Automatic Room Optimization (D.A.R.O.) system. A calibrated microphone is included for the D.A.R.O. system. Input connections are made via unbalanced RCA connections or balanced Neutrik® combo XLR/TRS jacks. "The main deal here is that 12” driver. I was told that JLA spent lots of time and effort engineering a woofer that could match the 3” peak-to-peak excursion of their W7-series woofers."

"There’s no question that, in a high-end system, the e112 can serve that purpose with aplomb. In fact, I wouldn’t hesitate to dial back the crossover to 40Hz and use the e112 with three-way floorstanding speakers with greater bass capabilities than the Magico S1’s. I think the e112 would still be quite a plus."

"To test the e112 in this respect, I chose Jack Johnson and Friends’ Sing-A-Longs and Lullabies for the Film Curious George (16/44.1 AIFF, Universal). The song “The 3 R’s” begins with a deep, tight kick drum that satisfies my inner need for bass impact. I listened to this track at peaks of about 95dB (at the listening position), and the tapestry of the music held together just perfectly. "Let’s start by talking about the driver. This E-Sub E-112 sub is a sealed design with a custom-built long-throw 12″ driver. The most obvious peculiarity is in the driver’s depth. This massive driver nearly fills up the cabinet due to its deep motor structure. There are several reasons for this depth: First, the motor structure is designed to support the driver’s substantial 2-1/2″ peak-to-peak excursion with excellent linearity. Another reason is that the depth allows for the dual spiders which are spaced 6″ apart. The additional spider prevents twisting of the voice coil under the demanding acceleration-induced forces that come into play at higher SPL’s or during quick transients."

"In the stages where the metamorphosis was really taking hold, the wholeness of the bass sent chills up and down my spine with every beat of the black swan’s wings."

"Pipe organ is one instrument where a sub can actually enhance the realism (not just the impact) of music. In this case, the E-112 sub reinforced the sense of space as it should.

The E-Sub subwoofer driver features a radical, deep architecture designed to create a highly linear, mechanical action and a motor design with enough linear excursion to handle the challenging program material.

A totally new switching amplifier was engineered for the E-Subs, with a compact and efficient switching power supply. This design allows us to keep the E-Sub's dimensions compact while delivering ample clean power that will fully exercise the drivers' excursion ranges.

The E-Sub's feature set has been designed to allow the use of E-Subs in a wide range of applications, from full home theater systems to dedicated two-channel music systems, to desktop audio workstations. CR-1 is built around two banks of precision Linkwitz-Riley low-pass and high-pass filters. Multiplying DACs with monolithic ratio matching are employed to adjust the analogue circuit's filter frequencies. This offers superior tracking behaviour and far more precise left/right channel balance, compared to conventional approaches.

Another of CR-1's unique and powerful features is a pair of rotary controls that control the damping of each filter bank. These damping controls dramatically improve the acoustic summing through the crossover region, by compensating for each speaker system's frequency response. At the center of the front panel, a single intuitive, rotary control permits quick adjustment of the relative level between the subwoofer(s) and main speakers.

To minimize distortion and noise, CR-1 employs top-grade component parts in its all-analogue audio circuitry: 1% precision resistors, JFET-input audio-grade op-amps, polypropylene film-and-foil capacitors and metallized-polypropylene film capacitors, to name just a few. We also build CR-1 right here in the U.S.A., to ensure top quality and dependability.

CR-1's input-output design makes it equally adaptable to studio, mastering suite or audiophile two-channel playback environments. To accommodate dual-mode systems, we also include a bypass feature that engages a pass-through from a dedicated "Managed Bass Input" on the rear panel, to the CR-1's subwoofer outputs. This makes it convenient to switch from two-channel to multi-channel mode.

CR-1 is the ultimate tool for subwoofer integration.
