Mark Guiliana quartet at the Control Club in Bucharest. Fantastic venue and good jazz. Touted as one of the world's greatest jazz drummers but I didn't think so, though the bass player was excellent. Nevertheless, a great night.

Nile Rogers & Chic at The O2 last Wednesday.
    Epic dance tunes as expected
    * one of the support acts - Franc Moody is worth checking out (already had them on a playlist).

A mainly digital setup with a musical amplifier and endearing 1970's speakers. A CD player that hardly ever gets used and a turntable that is good enough to remind my how enjoyable my old vinyl is. Some cables and things.

Went to see 808 State at the Manchester Academy last night
It was good but not brilliant - they had updated all the tunes so that even ones you knew got twisted - all done with a modern drum and bass style of drumming which for me didn't work.

I saw Blue Oyster Cult in a small venue not too far from Richmond, Virginia. I’ve been a big fan, and have most of their albums after “Don’t Fear the Reaper”. The stuff they did before I was not into, and was not up to the quality of the work they did after that time. I’m not sure if they had a lineup change? But they got a lot better with their later work.

So I had high expectations for this show! But was sorely disappointed, they explained this was the first gig they had control over the song list, before they had to promote their latest album, and play the list the recording company wanted them to play. So, now they could select their own set list! And they chose to play all their old stuff, before Don’t Fear the Reaper came out. That song, and Fire of Unknown Origin were the only two of their later songs they played. Very disappointing, to me anyway, perhaps there were others who preferred their earlier work? Apparently they did.

It's 7 sleeps until Ariel Posen plays at The Bulls Head in Alton, Staffordshire.
I am really looking forward to this one - the venue is a cosy upstairs function room in a lovely little hostelry.
The landlord has great musical taste, and if he really likes someone's music he'll invite 'em round to play.

“Nothing discloses real character like the use of power. It is easy for the weak to be gentle. Most people can bear adversity. But if you wish to know what a man really is, give him power. This is the supreme test. It is the glory of Lincoln that, having almost absolute power, he never abused it, except on the side of mercy".

“You see these dictators on their pedestals, surrounded by the bayonets of their soldiers and the truncheons of their police ... yet in their hearts there is unspoken fear. They are afraid of words and thoughts: words spoken abroad, thoughts stirring at home -- all the more powerful because forbidden -- terrify them. A little mouse of thought appears in the room, and even the mightiest potentates are thrown into panic.”

"You don't have free will. You have the appearance of free will.”

“There's a war out there, old friend. A world war. And it's not about who's got the most bullets. It's about who controls the information. What we see and hear, how we work, what we think... it's all about the information!”
