I've never come across 23:42 am before.
Just because we've now got a 24-clock, I see no reason to lose the 'am' or 'pm' distinction after it. For me, it looks incomplete.

Marco - Chris is right, the the 24 hour clock doesn't use AM or PM - if you've seen it written that way elsewhere, it's wrong!
AM / PM refers to the two 12 hour divisions (before midday and after midday) within the 12 hour clock: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/12-hour_clock
