I'm Lawrence.
Funny how things move on, when I was a teenager the Monteverdi Choir/EBS stuff sounded fresh and fleet footed, now in comparison to younger ensembles they often sound like they are plodding along in much the same way as they had made the more traditional performances sound in the past.

Yeah, JEG is just an old fuddy duddy.
Never did go for much of his output - too controlled.
A conductor's job is to control every aspect of a performance - the ultimate control freak - but it shouldn't sound like it and with JEG it very often does,
Anyway I think I am alone in the world taking that view!
Midnight last night, New Year fireworks, and there's us with 5 cats, 3 of them of a nervous disposition, so we needed music to mask the whizzes and bangs.
Kamran Ince 2nd symphony "The Fall of Constantinople" to the rescue - the 1st movement is a Turkish percussion extravaganza - perfect!!

Oh, and a ....
... to you all.
.
I'm going to have to listen to more "younger ensembles"!
Gardiner's Fairy Queen was one of my first introductions to Purcell - that and the Tony Palmer film "England, My England" from 1995 that Gardiner did the music for too - so I'm always going to hold a bit of a candle for this recording.
I listened to a lot of Bach cantatas a few years ago (still enjoy them) and compared a lot of the recordings. Though Herreweghe was usually my preference, I often felt that Gardiner's live cycle came out very well - sounded full of life when compared to others (Suzuki for example).
I'm interested to hear suggestions for alternatives if you have them?
Pretty wonderful on CD .. doesn't appear to be on Spotify or Qobuz though. An old favourite that I'd somehow mislaid till today. Beautiful recording too as well as beautifully sung.

A stern and severe looking geezer, but he wrote delightful oboe music!
