These again, they really are very good.

Solo violin "sonatas" by Tartini. Not in JSB's league, but still enjoyable.

Not bad at all. Enjoyable, but still a 2nd tier Bruckner performance for me, though.

Bruckner's 0th, the "Nullte" which he disowned!! .... one of my favourite symphonies

Critically mauled, but I really like Venzago's Bruckner. He just sounds right to me, even if everyone else disagrees!

and an evening of G&S in a couple of superb performances on DVD-Video ...

    Amazon review here http://www.amazon.co.uk/Hillborg-Ele...words=hillborg

Weird avantgarde shit is happily absent, Hillborg seems comfortable with tonality, just it's of the 21stC kind - lots of interesting things going on, very varied. Long lines - he has an attention span longer than many composers seem to have these days.
Consider me a bit of a Hillborg fanboy.

The opening track is remarkably like the start of Stravinsky's Rite of Spring. It must be intentional.
... the problem is that it lasts for nearly half an hour. IgorS knew that he had to move on after a few minutes. OK, to be fair, there is some development and variety, and things do hot up after 20 minutes. Some tonalities and glissandi are very like Gloria Coates' music (which is a good thing!).
    Yep, interesting music.

Guridi again. I do like his quartets.

So I thought I'd try this as well.

And apart from a 13 minute piece involving a childrens' chorus it was really good!

Pleasant and quite interesting. Nothing to scare the horses.

I then tried some Enescu symphonies, but they didn't do anything for me.

I was surprised how good these were!

And to wind up the evening, K.406 string quintet from

Franz Clement wrote his violin concerto a year before Beethoven wrote his own, and he commissioned and was the soloist in the 1st performance of the Beethoven concerto.
I've listened to the Clement concerto 3 times now, and each time it sounds increasingly like Beethoven just copied it and extended the ideas / emboldened it to create his own concerto! Astonishingly alike in places. Yup, plagiarism was alive and well back then, and Beethoven was not above a bit of borrowing.
I find it quite shocking, in fact!

Solti's Das Rheingold (1958) on HFPA blu-ray. Like the gin and tonic of Wagner recordings - direct and refreshing. Beginning extended preparations for my first live Wagner in the summer.

This is exceedingly pleasant 'light baroque' ...

Not so keen on Hasse's choral music. Didn't like some Italian Cantatas.

But these solo organ 'concertos' were good, light and entertaining
