Very interesting, Tom, and thanks for the link to the Oryx website - wow! - a goldmine of (presumably) pre-HIP baroque recordings (which is just fine by me!).
I had quite a few Oryx LPs in my collection back in the day..

Listening atm to Bach's Partita #1 played by Derek Adlam on a Feldberg Harpsichord.

It sounds good even if it is MP3.

The label that the Stravinsky Rite is on is Onyx, though, not Oryx.

Excellent and emotional performance of Shostakovich cello concerto #1 by a young British lad who won the 2016 BBC Musician of the Year.

Bassoon as a solo instrument, anyone?
This album of contemporary classical works well.

The Heino Eller School - Works by Eller, Pärt, Tüü, Sumera, Tubin and Rääts

Ostrobothnian Chamber Orchestra, cond. Juha Kangas

Finlandia Records, Warner Finland 3984-21448-2 (1998)

Picked up in a charity shop today: works by Estonian composers who were either pupils of Eller, or were pupils "once removed" and thus heavily influenced by him. Have to confess the only Estonian composer I knew of was Arvo Pärt - and I'm not especially keen on his output, despite his numerous change of musical style. So this disc has given me the opportunity to investigate some other Estonian composers of the 20th Century.

    On this disc:

    Heino Eller - 'Sinfonietta'

Lepo Sumera - 'Come Cercando' ("Like Searching")

    Avo Pärt - 'Silouans Song'

    Jaan Rääts - 'Chamber Concerto'

    Erkki-Sven Tüür - 'Passion'

    and

Eduard Tubin - 'Music for Strings'.

Only had a chance to play it through the once, so can't really go by first impressions and it needs further listening - but it's not offending my ears.

    Gosh.
    This is wonderful.
    Kalliwoda.

OK, so he's no Bruckner or Beethoven.
    Still hugely enjoyable, though.
    Place him alongside Mendelssohn, maybe.

A stunning performance of Walton's 1st symphony by Louis Fremaux - almost up there with Previn/RCA!
Better than Karabits and Gardner, I think.
