Othmar Schoeck (1886-1957) Penthesilea, Op.39 [1927]. A one act opera, libretto based on a story by Von Kleist. The opera presents the affair between Penthesilea, Queen of the Amazons, and Achilles. In the end she stands by her warrior's code and he, for love, abandons his with tragic consequences.
This version is the Pan Classics release with the Czech Philharmonic under Mario Venzago. Yvonne Naef as Penthesilea. A great performance with a less than stellar capture.

Yeah, great music, plus sonically the recording is stunning! Pretty rare album that one, too
Picked up a bargain at our local antiques emporium today: an absolute mint (cover and vinyl), looks like it's never been played, 10" LP of WAGNER THE RIDE OF THE VALKYRIES - FLYING DUTCHMAN. 1950s DECCA, which is superb:
Yours for the princely sum of £1!
Marco.
