Château Les Moutins lies on the Right Bank of the Garonne. It has been family owned since 1852 and boasts 60 hectares of vineyard, most of those 20+ years old. The clay, limestone and chalk soils are key to the freshness and expressive aromas of the wine, redolent of ripe plum, redcurrant and rose petal. Merlot is the main grape on this side of the river, which accounts for the voluptuous, velvety style of the wine.
2019 was a great vintage – well balanced with deliciously ripe fruit. Nearly-all Merlot, this velvety claret makes delightful drinking now and over the next few years.

Château du Ragon. A petit-château claret that is inexpensive and delivers all the elegant fruit and structure the region is renowned for. It hails from the 5-star 2020 vintage. This claret is brimming with smooth red and black fruits, with smooth tannins. Open early and serve with roast meats.
Tasting notes: Juicy, rounded flavours of plum, cherry and blackberry, smooth spice
Aroma: Ripe aromas of juicy red and black fruits, soft spices.

Château Le Bonalguet 2020, Bordeaux

Château Le Bonalguet is from a small estate in Saint-Germain du Puch, between Bordeaux and Saint-Emilion. The estate grows Merlot, Malbec and Cabernet on clay and limestone soils typical of the greater Saint-Emilion region. Owners Agnès and Alexandre Sueur and winemaker Gregory Dalla Longa make wines that reflect this special terroir and the unique character of each vintage. And Bordeaux 2020, with its long, warm summer, was certainly high quality. Decant at least an hour prior to serving it with roast lamb or duck.
Tasting notes: Supple, rounded with bright, fruity length and rounded tannins.
Aroma: Deep cherry, plum, cassis, with a hint of floral and cedar spice.

Château La Tour Carnet 2020, Haut-Médoc
Château La Tour Carnet has been the witness to the history of wine making in France since it was founded in the 12th Century. The estate belonged to the Montaigne family in the 16th century, its wine becoming famous when it joined the 1855 Grands Crus classification. The best techniques are used to express the great qualities of the vinyard.
The Château La Tour Carnet 2020 is made from a blend of Merlot (60%) and Cabernet Sauvignon (40%)
Best after 2023. Almost always a winner, the 2020 Chateau La Tour Carnet offers a terrific, medium-bodied, concentrated style as well as classic notes of ripe currants, darker cherries, spicy wood, and graphite. It has the vintage's more focused, classic, structured style, with ripe tannins and outstanding length.

Now enjoying a bottle of Sainsbury's 2022 Palais Rohan, St-Emilion, Bordeaux.
Rich and concentrated, this St-Emilion has delicious complex aromas of red berries and cedar notes, with ripe silky tannins.
14% ABV. Normally £17.50 a bottle, but now on offer at £14.00.

Yes, I raised a glass to Grant last night.
It was a 10 year old Glenmorangie single malt.
Time to raise a wee dram to Grant, will miss our chats and his advice and thoughts on all sorts of subjects.
My current favourite dram is from Ardnamurchan.
