Generally I find that the irons themselves are okay, but it is the tips that are rubbish. They have poor coatings and corrode away very quickly. If you could find a tip for a professional iron that fitted the budget iron the budget iron would probably be quite good.
Ive had a lidl soldering kit for a couple of years and found it fine for my limited needs-fixed my tuntable phono connections with it a couple of weeks ago.
I will try to snaffle one on sunday.....thanks for the heads up Geoff.
Sounds like I bought at the same time as you. Mine works well. I've used it quite a bit and it's still going. I've had a few over the years and this one is as good as, or better than any.

My experience with small tools sold by Lidl is the same as yours.

Yes, it gets you to the Lidl site but if you follow through non food offers it doesn't seem to be there either.
