that will have stung you robin.. my tyres embarrassingly are still like new
Is it worth trying to convert the pushbike? Wouldn't it be easier to just buy a new electric bike?
I hear that there may be different reasons for owning one - depending on usage and the rider. Some people want to extend the range - as they can't ride for 20 or more miles, some want to go faster, some want to go up hills - which are tiring. The added weight of the motor and battery can be a disadvantage, and that can affect different riders in different ways. Some would find they might be too slow and hard work on the flat, while others would happily trade that for being able to get up hills. Also, riding for exercise might be a different proposition than riding to get from A to B and back again.
Rumour has it that one can spend £2-3k on an electric bike - though it is possible to spend more than that on a decent racing bike without the electrics.
Are there actually kits for converting regular bikes, and would they really be worth looking at?
It's much cheaper to buy a petrol car than an electric one at the moment in most markets. Unless one is doing very high mileage, the capital cost of a new EV is not going to be offset by the significantly cheaper "fuel" cost. There are good and bad things about EVs as they are at present.
I don't imagine it's easy to do high mileages in EVs as things stand, unless you just drive round the block for a living.
Spotted this locally and couldn't resist it, a vintage Gary Fisher 'Tassajara' 13 mountain bike. Collected it just now and it's in good nick, exactly the right size for a shorty like me and it's really light. These older slant style bikes ride really well. A bit of fun for summer (along with the other bikes I have :)).

Probably still the best those. Nice find
With the current population in the uk at" or over the driving age, the notion that all who want to drive will own/use an electric car is a rediculous notion, when considering the enormous increase in electricity demand charging these things will have on our current electrical infrastructure.
