What dose GEC of Great Britain stand for ?
I'm thinking the G is for Genalex ?
Always thought it was General Electric company
Some how they are connected with Genalex ? Like G.E. General Electric valves?
They joined up with Marconi and were. Called Gec Marconi. They made lots of stuff
Genalex is a re-branding name for M-O valves (Marconi - Osram). According to the company website the name Genalex is reserved for those samples of M-O valves which have the highest performance.
The Marconi company was absorbed by English Electric in 1945, which in turn was absorbed into GEC (The General Electric Company) in 1968, which was then known as GEC-Marconi. The name GEC was usually associated with heavy electrical engineering, whereas Marconi was associated with electronic engineering: radar, telecommunications, test equipment, etc.

The M-O Valve / GEC story has lots of twists and turns, but in the early 1950s the British were trying to sell lots of goods in to the USA market to boost the UK economy. (Motor bikes, cars, HiFi, all sorts.)
Part of that was ''British Industries Corp.'' selling Leak, Garrard, Genalex, Wharfedale and RJ in the States. (and part of their logo was a golden lion...)
So a long winded way to say the G in GEC (UK) is General Electric Company, but maybe that is the 'Gen' in Generlex? Just a marketing name.
(The US GE Company is not connected to the UK GEC by the way. UK GEC had closer connections with RCA at various times I understand.)
