I'm guessing the plsstic is acting as reinforcement as the top plate would be weakened with that much slottage....

My guess would be to protect the grill underneath from accidental damage.
The struts of the bare metal grills on their own are fairly vulnerable and could bend pretty easily (and be difficult to straighten) whereas the plastic would absorb and dissipate energy without kinking.
But just a guess ;)
EDIT - just noticed that's already said :doh:
there are two large heat sinks just under those vents, so guessing it gets pretty toasty there, with the plastic to stop melting your fingers :eyebrows:
+1 for preventing damage in transit, probably supposed to be taken off when bought, maybe the instructions mention it?
