Here's a well known speaker designers creation, reverse engineered by another speaker designer. According to the AudioExcite guy, the crossover was designed to work best at 1mtr. They are not supposed to be nearfield monitors, so It looks like something went wrong somewhere. Good luck to someone trying to get that kind of accuracy without software.

As someone once said (Possibly), Antonio Stradivari didn't own a computer.
But through his family and upbringing had a fantastic apprenticeship that allowed him to build what most people say are the best violins ever produced.
Perhaps... Who knows? You'd have to try it. But there's also the chance that you might fuck things up! ;)
The point is, improving is one thing, but without the software the best old designs certainly don't sound broken, in the sense that it's impossible to do the job right without it.
