I've been having a good listen to the SPU Royal GM MkII, which a customer asked to hear. When set up carefully (its Replicant tip does need very accurate setup of VTA and azimuth) and correctly loaded, it's utterly delightful. Possibly the most 'modern' and refined sounding SPU which is perhaps not surprising given its 7 ohm coil impedance (high for an SPU but otherwise quite 'normal') and very finely shaped tip, but still very much an SPU with an organic and expressive character that really does drill down into the soul of the music. The amazing thing is that the SPU Royal GM MkII costs a relatively sensible £1750 and for that price it really does offer a great alternative to a lot of modern MC cartridges costing around the same, or more, including some from Ortofon.
