Personally I found them best up close and tilted to ear height. They are not fussy with regards to room boundaries so can be placed near a wall. I've read that the larger models need more breathing space.

Interesting, I find that whilst point source speakers give great image they tend to have a smaller sweet spot than multi-driver arrangements - maybe the lack of baffle aids this here?
The TD512 speakers have arrived! They are significantly bigger than the TD508s:

The extra size makes an obvious improvement at the bottom end. I don't think I'll need to turn on my sub-woofer very often.
Initial listening and the clarity and natural sound is just wonderful. At the moment, I've got them on my existing stands. I need to get hold of some spikes before I can get them in place.
One very obvious thing about these speaker is how well they are made. Really solid and beautifully put together.
very nice in black
Considering the drivers are only 4 cms extra those cabs are much bigger than I expected!

I was a little surprised when the boxes arrived. It's silly really as I've seen the TD712z often enough, so I should have realised just how big they'd be.
Their black colour suits my system better than white - and my wife likes the look of them - so management approval!
The stands are very tall. They don't look that substantial, but looks are deceiving. The top and bottom plates are solid aluminium, and the central tube is full of acoustic sand - so very solid and well made. I need some cones to sit them on before I can use them in place on my wooden floor.
For now, the speakers seem to be fine on my current stands.
I'll get my Isotek system disc out over the weekend and have a play with positioning.
I use spiked stands on a wooden floor also. Try granite chopping boards underneath them to protect the floor. It's a cheap fix and makes them easy to move about when sat on the slabs.
