When The Battle of the River Plate was completed and screened for executives at the Rank Organisation, it was received so well that it was decided to hold the release of the film for a year, so that it could be chosen as part of the next year's Royal Film Performance (in 1956), since 1955's film had already been selected. The royal premiere was held at the Odeon Leicester Square on 29 October 1956 in the presence of Queen Elizabeth II and Princess Margaret.
Nicely made film this and although not absolutely accurate its not too far from truth.
edit.. also it was interesting that th thought of "goof" of German seamen wearing non German helmets, wasnt a goof but forced on the makers. As the Graf Spee was actually the USS Salem, the Americans wouldnt allow a Nazi flag to be hoist on their ship, so that part was done on a British ship.. The British wouldnt let the men on their ship wear German helmets hence the British ones.. Of course this wan only 10 yrs after war too so some attitutes were raw.
Not sure if they would be any different now, although we dont really have any suitable ships now
I was obsessed with war films when I was young but I had this one down as rather boring. Sink the Bismarck and the Cruel Sea were much better roughly contemporary WWII naval war films.
It was on a similar level to Battle of the Bulge, equally not that good when compared to say Dunkirk or Ice Cold in Alex.
'Battle Of The River Plate' was one of my father's favourite films for reasons I never got to the bottom of.
He had to watch it anytime it was on which was quite a lot in the 1970s, usually on Sunday afternoon. I'd probably seen it three times by the time I was 6.
The Graf Spee in the film just looks way too much like the Yank ship that plays it, you'd think they would have made more of an effort but reading what Grant said maybe they just couldn't.
Otherwise top film and I always watch it when I see it's on.
Dad's Army, 2016. the much maligned remake... Personally i think its terrific.. stars the likes of Bill Nighy, Toby Jones, Catherine Zeta Jones, Tom Courtenay, Michael Gambon and Bill Patterson.
