Was well recieved by all and made $104m from a $3m budget. Hoffman after taxes and living expenses netted just $4k.. Only the director thought him right for the role....

The War of the Worlds, 1953.. original and best... directed by Byron Haskin, and starring Gene Barry and Ann Robinson.

Although the special effects in the day were good, with the recopying onto different film stock they are now poor by comparison alas, although 4k version is much better.. Still its a nicely made film although it cost over $2m , and only broke even.

Turned over $500m in 1991, which was, adjusted for inflation, the tenth-highest grossing of all time for an R-rated film. It was also the highest grossing film of the year. T1 is better in most ways but this was a huge step up in special effects.

I watched 'The Edge' 1997 on DVD last night. I'd never heard of it until recently and bought it on the strength of reviews. What a great movie! Powerful stuff from Anthony Hopkins and Alec Baldwin, gripping all the way through.
