Miles Davis - 'Bitches Brew'
Having eschewed playing in jazz nightclubs and wearing a suit and tie, Miles has a change of target audience. Now wearing denim, Miles "gets down with the kids" with this, his first album in his new guise.
Surprisingly I only ever play one side: 'Miles Runs the Voodoo Down'.
I came to this quite late in life. There seemed to be so many vinyl pressings of this, and so many opinions as to which is best, I thought 'sod it' and got it on CD instead :)Quote:

I think I'll just stick with my CD, which fared reasonably well, and only cost me a couple of quid.
I had the CD then got the SACD so gave the CD away but I have a feeling the CD is actually the mastering I prefer.
I played it too much in the '90s though, it was my favourite 'chill out after the pub' album, along with 'After The Goldrush.'
The tape machine used to record the first three tracks on the original 1959 recording ran 1.25% too slow., hence on replay those tracks sound fast. The fault was not found until 1992, and since then all subsequent LPs and CDs have all tracks running at the correct speed.
Those comparison sites are IMO unhelpful and just cause confusion. Sounds like the CD version you have is fine. :)

Good morning Barry, yes my CD is also the Columbia/Legacy one. The notes on the back of the case make mention of an "all tube three track machine" (whatever that is), which makes the instruments sound more rich and full apparently, compared to the "thin and piping" sound of earlier digital remasterings. All I know is it sounds fine to me :)Quote:

Here's two examples of mastering issues with streaming mentioned elsewhere. I'd like to listen to the 1957 Cliff Craft album, but Qobuz only has the 2019 remaster. Likewise Glass Bead Games I played yesterday is a 2025 Hi Res remaster, not the 1974 album. I would like to listen to the original, not the remaster.

I have a bit of a love/hate relationship with Bitches Brew - sometimes I love it, others not . . . definitely one I have to be in the mood for, but I really admire it for what it represents musically.
Ah , so a completely different recording. Perhaps the tracks, for whatever reasons, didn't make it on to the original double album.
I think I have said elsewhere that I don't really like what Miles did during his "denim period". Here I'm thinking of 'Live Evil' and 'On the Corner'.
However I did hear him play at the Concertgebouw, Amsterdam in 1982, and the concert was excellent. :)
Sadly I was never fortunate enough to see Miles - what a venue to see him in too.
