If I ever won the lottery though, I'd buy a house next to a stream, I believe some good savings can be made with a water powered generator. No need for it ever to fail - during dry spells I could assist the stream by adding water from my tap via a garden hose :)

Well it certainly wouldn't work for me, with my lack of technical skills - I'd end up electrocuting the fish

The majority of water wheels are big, cumbersome and slow moving so dont really generate electricity well. Its not to say you couldnt do it tho. You just have to design a different one and put it in a place where it will spin quickly enough.

you can power a TV from a bicycle so a water wheel should do it easy.

yeah it can but a normal waterwheel doesnt spin quickly enough reall to produce enough. you have to design it right and place it right too. it still wont do much more than a house and solar and wind are more productive on small scales. tidal works well too ... solar panels on my roof would likely produce all i need plus a bit
