Kyiv might be Ukranian but we're British so it's 'Kiev' like it's always been. We're don't say 'I'm off for a long weekend in Roma' do we?

The Ukrainian name is Ки́їв, written in the Ukrainian Cyrillic alphabet, and usually rendered in Latin letters (or romanized) as Kyiv. Before standardization of the alphabet in the early 20th century, the name was also spelled Кыѣвъ, Киѣвъ, or Кіѣвъ with the now-obsolete letter yat.

But spoken in Russian, Kiev sounds more like “Key-EV.” But at times, it sounded more like “keev,” with the long “ee” pronounced as a single syllable.

I remember fifties/sixties Soviet cameras marked with the 'Kiev' brand. Quite liked them.

My favourite is the Italian port of Livorno, I still have a world atlas from about 1972 which shows it as 'Leghorn.'

Immediately brings to mind the once highly popular 'Foghorn Leghorn' cartoons, now sadly confined to the dustbin of history by political correctness.

No more than I could say I have visited: Shqipëria; Hellas; Mesopotamia; Persia; Cathay; French Indo-China; Ceylon; The Japans; Haute Volta; Abyssinia; Tanganyika; Bechuanaland: North and South Rhodesia, etc..
