Yes, 'Ambient' is the sort of thing that is played in lifts, or what my dentist has playing all day, supposedly to calm the clients. I complained, so he changed it to some piano 'library music' which was much better.
Reading about Vollenweider and his philosophy, I think his work is largely unclassifiable.
As opposed to Stockhausen whose work is largely unlistenable.
There is also "quality" ambient music not to be confused with the dross you often hear in massage parlours and the like (I mean the genuine ones [emoji23]).

Can't really comment on the work of Orbit, save to say I don't really like it and have none of their material.
Listened to a few Vollenweider albums today. Definitely wouldn’t class it as ambient, more electronic jazz.

I first saw The Orb at Glastonbury in '93 - they really didn't sound like anything we'd heard before, that combined with trouser flapping bass from their huge sound system made quite an impression. I've seen them a few times since, some ok some disappointing. I suppose you have to be in the mood :)Quote:
