Think of it as two arms, one mounted on the end of the other. The massive gantry (and it sure as hell is a massy arm) deals only with horizontal motion, is magnetically damped and is counterbalanced with the big weight on the end. The small arm is very light, deals only with vertical motion, has its tracking weight set by a spring and is counterbalanced with the small weight on its end.
The result is a massy arm with huge damping to give the horizontal motion a feeling of being set in concrete - at least as far as the cartridge is concerned at groove velocities. The vertical motion is so sprightly, in comparison, that it tracks warped records with ease, in fact laughs them off. There is *nothing* in my collection that it cannot track.

The control knob looks like Thorens. The arm looks like an Acos? The clamp is definitely a Michell :)
