Apparently the bottom one is a passive radiator. There's a thread here started by a Simon P. from 2009 who had a pair. A pair went for just £72 at the end of last month.

I was never swayed by the whole Linn thing. Bought my first Thorens 124/II in 1971 and compared it with a Linn in 1982. The Thorens stayed, the Linn went.

Regarding Quad electronics, I have over the years possessed two sets of Quad valve amps. Neither set remained, both were replaced by Quad SS amps. The Radford (STA15 Mk. III) however is a different matter; the mid range is sweet and beguiling at the expense of the frequency extremes, especially the bass, but overall it is better than the Quad II. I keep it as an interesting alternative to my SS amps.

Incidently, that TD124/II on eBay with a starting price of £2,300 didn't sell - well there's a surprise.
