Stars Yul Brynner, Steve McQueen, Charles Bronson, Robert Vaughn, Brad Dexter, James Coburn, Horst Buchholz and Eli Wallach.
Music is by Elmer Bernstein and Cinematography by Charles Lang. The film was slated originally by many critics(shows what they know) but the score was listed at No. 8 on the American Film Institute's list of the top 25, after missing out at the Oscars.
It is the second most shown film in U.S. television history, behind only The Wizard of Oz

'Steptoe And Son' 1972
Love these British films from this era as it is from the world as I grew up in. Everything was a bit old and worn but it all had character and a shabby charm. I like to watch what is going on in the background in the location scenes, all the old shops and cars and that.
You look at London in this film, what a difference. In comparison it looks like Disneyland now.

Dances With Wolves from 1990. Stars Kevin Costner in this film adaptation of the 1988 book of the same name by Michael Blake and tells the story of a Union Army lieutenant who travels to the American frontier to find a military post and his dealings with a group of Lakota Indians. Won seven Academy Awards including the score from John Barry.

Tonight I watched Dads Army, Blackadder, and now Kagemucha My Cinema reserve Steel book version. Not everyones cuppa but I like it.

Some of the music - no in fact most of the music, is horrific too. And yes, I mean horrific. Try a listen to Sweet Dreams' 'Never Give It Up' if you don't believe me.
Even worse now. Paula Tsui. Jesus wept.
Just waiting for a firmware update and I can go back to the 1970s instead..

Excellent film. Its a difficult subject in general, and covering so much ground its difficult to fit into a film. It may have been better to end it just after the war, but in many ways the short second section is the more important, and damning of American policies, which basically went on til the 60's.. some say they still exist...
one of those films that no doubt pleases no-one who has a side, but should really emphasise how racist much of America was
Man in the high castle series 2.. still watching this; an epp every now and then, as its the last of the series im watching available til they make more, so spinning it out.
following that I will I think start watching Roots
my dvd boxset I ve had for years going in now.. its on double sided discs, and I hate them as its difficult to see what side is what... Anyway off to bed now as pains getting to me to watch this... tatafk

Was looking for something to watch, good spot.
Continuing with the "ROOTS" marathon.
Couple of films tonight as its Friday night at the movies. First up is the golden oldie musical comedy Paint Your Wagon from 1969 and stars Lee Marin, Clint Eastwood and the lovely Jean Seburg.

'Mean Streets' (a week or so back, via the iPlayer). Robert de Niro chewing the scenery, and a more understated performance by Harvey Keitel. Lots of Italian-Americans shouting at each other.

A series of 25 films released by Criterion in a dual-format box set that I have long wanted to watch but owing to the expense of the set it has taken time to set aside the money.
A middle-brow Japanese action series based on the tale of the blind masseur who beneath his bumbling accident-prone facade is master of swordsmanship, sumo wrestling, and archery. Unlike his opponents he favours a cane sword rather than the usual katana. The films are largely formulaic and usually involve the principal character Zatoichi [played to perfection by Shinataro Katsu] agreeing to carry out the last wish of a dying man or woman which inevitably ends up embroiling him in trouble with corrupt officials, cruel magistrates, and oppressive yakuza bosses and their henchmen. Despite his blindness, low social status, stocky build, and appalling table manners he is a hit with the ladies everywhere he goes. An eternal wanderer and outcast, sentimental, but also capable of visiting devastating violence on those who take him on . A sort of Zen Robin Hood righting wrongs in favour of the poor and oppressed. On his travels he teams up with some famous figures from Japanese and Asian cinema such as Yojimbo and The One Armed Swordsman. The earlier films are fairly humerous and light, but as the series progresses the features become somewhat darker in tone. Overall great fun.
Just finished 12 Angry Men (1957) . superb film, with a stellar cast. Forgot how powerful the acting was . not seen it for quite a few years or it felt that way.

That does sound really good. A lot of Japanese stuff is hard to appreciate unless you get their weird sense of humour. I guess they probably say that about the British.Quote:

I also have quite a few with Flixster as dig versions of dvds, mostly from my sons collection. Along with my dvd collection I can usually find something to watch
