Well all this makes me feel like a right numpty.

Got the new PSU (2.4a) from Maplins. Immediately stuff starts to happen.

Still having major probs with Volumio but it all has at least fired up. Volumio.local works and I can get into a settings page. Ethernet - fine. Wifi - fine. However it won't point to the NAS just goes into a 'connecting' loop that lasts for ages, and eventually 'page not available' comes up.

Switched to Rune Audio and got MUCH further - got as far as most things seemingly working, recognised by MPad on the iPad mini, downloaded the library etc (which is pretty large, about 200 CDs worth downloaded from my Amazon accountin MP3, plus about the same size again in FLAC files though many fewer files of course). But damned if I could make MPad actually play anything - constantly 'paused'.

Back to Volumio again and same probs as before.

It's funny if you go back to the early 80s there was all sorts of cheap/free software about that 'sort of' worked if you coaxed it and faddled with it. The the corporate world got its act together and everything just worked though much more expensive of course. Seems we've had to reinvent the old days just for the hell of it. I had more patience back then though.

Have you considered using Volumio/Rune with the web interface until they are working faultlessly. Then if MPaD is your preference switching to that? Both players were built/designed to be setup that way. I use the web screens and do not have the problems you are experiencing. I won't say it was all effortless/easy but once I had read the setup notes for each (twice) it started to fall into place what I wasn't doing.

To avoid going nuts, how about sticking some sounds on a a usb stick. Insert in RPi usb port, and configure volumio to use USB as source.

In the meantime, presumingly you had a wifi only connection tested as working between your laptop and PI, but how do you know the PI could connect to your NAS? Need a bit of command line work to connect to PI via SSH, and then ping your NAS from the PI to ensure PI and NAS can talk to one another. Or, if poss ping PI from your NAS.

Once you're sure PI and NAS are making contact, double check how file shares on NAS has been set up and make sure correct details for the share are entered on the appropriate Volumio webpage.

Now I have 'playing' on Runeaudio (minutes ticking off) controllable from the web interfect (clunky!) but no sound on Hifiberry SPIDF, RPi audio socket, or to my USB input on the DAC.

It's seeing the NAS fine as it mounted and built the database OK via wifi on both the web client and the iPad app. Just no sound!!! So near and yet so far ....

What is set as Audio Output in Menu | MPD Configuration | Audio Output Interface? And Volume Control on the same page?

You may wish to try changing these if you are an adventurous/inquisitive sort.

I have volume control disabled. The only option I'm getting is R Pi analog or HDMI output, no options for USB (which my DAC can handle) or for the Digi+ board (which has two outputs, SPDIF and toslink - I don;t have toslink input anyway).

Close to giving up now. Been at this for 2 days solid!

EDIT: got it to give me analog out! It's making sound!

Suspect the issue is with the Hifiberry Digi+ board

Doesn't that suggest something to you? If you need to have your thoughts stimulated mine shows 3 options, HDMI Out, Analogue Out and DAC USB DAC. I am using a USB DAC.

Have you explored the command line ALSAMIXER which allows you to see and select the OUTPUT device at the OS level?

These are hints to give you something to look at and play with

Yes I'm a total numpty. No drivers in the standard Volumio board for the Digi+. I just got a copy of Raspabian with the drivers on and am about to try it.
