Spinning Today (Classical version)

I found some more bargain (minty) vintage classical vinyl today, in charity shops, while I was doing some Christmas shopping in Shrewsbury (all £1 each):

Haydn - Symphony No.83 in G Minor "The Hen" and Symphony No.101 in D "The Clock", with The London Philharmonic Orchestra, conducted by Gaetano Delogu, on EMI W.D & HO. Wills Master Series, from 1975.

Tchaikovsky - Piano Concerto No.1, Litolff Scherzo, with Peter Katin (piano) and The London Philharmonic Orchestra, conducted by John Pritchard, on EMI W.D & HO. Wills Master Series, from 1970.

Beethoven - Klavierkonzert ES-Dur/Piano Concerto No.5, with Christoph Eschenbach (piano) and The Boston Symphony Orchestra, conducted by Seiji Ozawa, on Deutsche Grammophon, from 1974.

Puccini - 'Greatest Hits': favourite melodies from La Bohème, Tosca and Madame Butterfly. Gianni Schicchi and Manon Lescaut, with The Columbia Symphony Orchestra, conducted by Andre Kostelanetz, on Columbia Harmony, from 1970.

Rachmaninov - Piano Concerto No.2 "Rhapsody on a Theme of Paganini", with Martino Tirimo (piano) and The Philharmonia Orchestra, conducted by Yoel Levi, on EMI, from 1982.

Mendelssohn - Violin Concerto. Bruch - Violin Concerto No.1, with Nathan Milstein (violin) and The Philharmonia Orchestra, conducted by Leon Barzin, on EMI, from 1961.

Chopin - Ballade No.1. Nocturnes. Polonaises, with Maurizio Pollini (piano), on HMV Master Series DMM Mastering, EMI 'His Master's Voice', from 1970.

Dvořák - Symphony No.9 "From the New World", with The Concertgebouw Orchestra, Amsterdam, conducted by Sir Colin Davis, on Philips Classics, from 1978.

I also picked up a couple of CDs: Shostakovich - Piano Concertos No.1 & No.3, with Dmitri Alexeev (piano), Philip Jones (trumpet) and The English Chamber Orchestra, conducted by Jerzy Maksymiuk, on EMI, from 1983. Tchaikovsky - Symphony No.6 "Pathetique" Romeo and Juliet, with The Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra, conducted by Herbert Von Karajan, on Deutsche Grammophon, digitally remastered from an original 1964 analogue recording.

A double CD - two performances of the Diabelli Variations for solo piano.

One played on a modern Steinway concert grand, the other on a copy of a Graf fortepiano of Beethoven's own time.

I have to confess I've never warmed to the Diabelli Variations, finding them bellicose and unsubtle. But that was always hearing them on a modern piano.

Played on a fortepiano of a type that Beethoven himself would have known - a very different sound - then suddenly this bumptious and overbearing music becomes subtle and nuanced and very enjoyable indeed.

A real revelation for me.

@Gromit: Do you know the Schmidt clarinet quintet? The clarinet is more part of the ensemble that a solo instrumenty a lot of the time. Interesting and very listenable!

The Litolff and Tchikovsky piano pieces played by Peter Katin sounds interesting Marco.

So too the recording of the Dvořák 9 by the Amsterdam Concertgebouw Orchestra. :)

One presumes wrong Marco - all of those names were from ancient Persian.
Xerxes was a Persian king
Artaxerxes was his son
Darius was his dad, another king
Roksana was a princess
Shiraz is a Persian city (now in Iran)

Artemis was Greek though!

Roksana was one of the wives of Alexander the Great, wasn't she?

I thought that was Roxanna, but I think it's the same person - she was Persian apparently
