It is an interesting story how American football got started. When the Puritans went to America they had their hands full for a while but after a few years they got settled and found they had no sport. Cricket was suggested but no-one knew how to make a cricket bat. One bloke recalled that at school they had played a game with a much cruder bat that anyone could whittle out of a thick branch. That game was Rounders but, worried about licencing constraints (Puritans are big worriers), they decided to call it 'Base Ball' and pretend it was something different entirely.
So that was the summer sorted but what about the winter? Now in any civilised country this would be devoted to Association Football. Problem was this was before the FA had been invented and football was just a piss-up and a fight between two villages on Shrove Tuesday. And the Puritans had come to America to get away from all that drunken rowdiness. So that was out.
Luckily Rugby had already been invented, by bizarre coincidence, at Rugby School. So they decided to play that but no-one had thought to bring a rule book with them so they had to work from their memories, which were a bit dim and distant by that point. There was a big argument about whether or not you were allowed to pass forward, The people who said 'Of course you can! What would be the point of only passing backwards?' won and so the game of American Football was born.
Those who lost went north and started Canada. They gave up on Rugby but someone had a rule book for hockey and so that's how that got started.
Just a bit of history for you there.

Cloverfield is really very good, first time I saw it I had no idea what it was about and was about to switch off ten minutes in, but then stuff starts happening. One of those films that is worth more than one watch IMO. It's really well done.Quote:

In many ways i agree. But Americans are not really interested in anything non American. They would have to make him a Yank and then the whole thing would be re written and screwed up. They made one once but it didnt work, so maybe best kept as books of joy. Ive got them all, and again most on audio cds that i listen too when in car. Much more enjoyable than music. Robert Downy Jr could do it. He'd be my pick, anyway. Most of the racism and sexism is in Flashman's commentary, so could be played down a bit. The actual events are fairly historically accurate and there are a lot of strong female and ethnic characters in all the stories. Not saying it would be easy, but I watch so many films that cost $100 million and think why did they bother making a film of that crap when there are these great stories lying unused?

Its a found footage film Grant. High production values and if you love giant monster smashing cities films then I think you will like this. If you hate that sort of thing then not for you. I liked this a lot. The early bits when New York comes under attack, but from what is chilling stuff. Shades of 9/11, the fear and terror palpable, but when its clear it some giant creature... it becomes surreal.Quote:

It was in my film of the year top 5. I didnt order them.. it just needs the ability to draw a line under the old characters. Tbh its better acted than the old ones.. just that we got used to them when young. I grew up with them and have all of it including the film so not anti in any way the original.

Honour for British Films
First Royal Film performance ever to take place will be on Friday, November 1, at the Empire, Leicester square, in the presence of the King and Queen and the Princesses.
It will be in aid of the Cinematograph Trade Benevolent Fund.
This will be an historic event. For many years the stage and music hall have been honoured by Royal Command performances.
Now the cinema receives equal recognition.
As can be understood it was no easy task to choose a film for this occasion.
A special viewing committee representing all sides of the industry saw all the films submitted by British and American producers.
They were considered not only for their intrinsic merits but also in view of their suitability for this particular occasion.
Finally, the entrants were narrowed down to three.
These were Metro's The Green Years, which had very strong claims because of the nature of the story and its many British associations.
The Magic Bow, a story of Paganini with Stewart Granger and Phyllis Calvert in the leading parts, and Yehudi Menuhin responsible for the violin playing.
And A Matter of Life and Death, the Michael Powell - Emeric Pressburger picture starring David Niven, Raymond Massey, Roger Livesey, and Kim Hunter.
After much careful consideration, the Viewing Committee decided on "A Matter of Life and Death".
This is an honour to British films of which we can be justly proud.
We don't mean to suggest that we can beat the Big Drum and crow about scoring over Hollywood.
Far from it. We can be modestly happy that we are producing pictures which are worthy of a Royal Command performance.
