Of Kings and Prophets - ABC on demand Sky Boxsets.
An odd one this, a sort of Biblical Game of Thrones. I am not sure who this is aimed at, GOT fans, Christians, Jews ? No idea. If you look at it as a dramatisation of the Books of Samuel its somewhat of a miss because there is too much here that isn't in those books, too much secular thinking, taking away from the Biblical.
Taking it as a GOT typed drama, it works mostly, but for me the deviations, additions and David being way older than he should have been circa the early parts of the story is a big detraction. Worth a watch though if you have Sky.

Well I watched first episode of The Wire.... To say I am not impressed would be putting it mildly! A glance at some reviews though reveals that it's infamous for taking ages to "get in to"... One review reckoned most either give up after the first couple of episodes or go on to find it amazing... little in between. If it wasn't for that I would not bother watching the second episode never mind anything beyond that... Unfathomable plot ("plot" is term I use loosely here as it seemed to be missing one entirely), American street slang as impenetrable as drunk weegies, police talking like "get a 402 on the FGT and put me a RRY in after the 335".... EH!? :scratch:
Yes, I know. It's very "dense" and you feel a bit intimidated by its closed-in intensity at first. My son got me the boxed sets and issued the same caveat, saying I needed to stick with it for the first three episodes, even if I didn't feel like it (some present!). Anyway, I did, and I was glad I did. It opens out into a fantastic drama, with some of the best and most complex characters I remember seeing on screen: Stringer Bell, Omar, Bubbles - terrific, memorable characters in superb performances. Think of it as not so much a police/crime drama, as a portrait of a city (thanks, King Crimson!) - in this case Baltimore, from a different angle in each series. Series 1, from the street; Series 2, from the unionized dockside labourers, Series 3, from the Town Hall, 4 from the schools and 5 from the newspaper media. Don't be tempted to take them out of order, though! Oh, and it helps if you put the subtitles on - pretend you're watching a Scandi-drama.Quote:

Re K-19, loved it, actually anything cold war/espionage related, recently finished The Night Manager bbc mini series, after hearing the awards it received, did not do it for me. Bill Nighty in Page 8/Turks & Caicos/Salting The Battlefield in comparison was way way way up there.

Now watching The Stepford Wives (1975), based on Ira Levin's dark scifi satire. Excellent film.

Based on Ilya Boyashov's novel about a tank man who despite 90% burns, pulled from a destroyed Russian tank, makes a miraculous recovery, and despite amnesia retains enough ability to be sent back to the front. Not long after returning its clear he isn't entirely normal, and seems to have an ability to read what happened to damaged tanks, and in one case the tank he reads was destroyed by the tank that killed his. The White Tiger.
The film is about the Russians putting a crew together and a modified T34 a T34/85 to destroy this White Tiger. What follows is an excellent film about tank warfare with a weird supernatural aspect. Think Duel meets Fury.
