"I have to agree with most reviews: unusually quiet pressing for the type of music (perhaps necessary for the 28+ mins packed on to side 1). I think fans would have paid a little extra for a 'typical loudness' 2LP set. On the plus side, I did not notice any non-fill or distortions that would have me immediately returning it to the store. It is a clean pressing on standard vinyl with the expected low noise level."

A new one to me Steve. I have a couple of his LPs. Does he play his 'piccolo bass'?
Well, from what I understand 'piccolo' bass to be, (I had to look it up :o) I would say yes. A lot. The album covers a variety of styles, none of which include much in the way of tunes, or lyrics, but does as usual showcase his huge talent. I would say it might take two or three listens to come to like it, though the musicianship and startling production quality will grab you from the start.Quote:

Playing the trio of Afro-futurist LPs by Hancock, don't play the Mwandishi one much, but just played it, and sounds better than it ever has. Hornets on Sextant is quite an awesome track, as is 'Quasar' on Crossings.

I was put off by this record's cover for years, perhaps decades, assuming it to be an unforgivably discofied, cheesy vocal-laiden, wide lapeled feast for those looking to make vinyl ash trays. I only gave in because it was priced at almost nothing and a NM WLP, at that (while a badly warp damaged Scorpions Live was priced at $25!!!) Someone had a sense of humor.
I was wrong. I was very wrong. This could have easily been a CTI release and no one would have batted an eye. "In the Beginning" (or it's 2LP counterpart "Then There Was Light, Vols. 1 & 2") it is not. However, it fits in just fine with, say... Bob James' H and similar.
