Spinning Today (Classical version)

Owain Park: Choral Works Stephen Layton, Choir of Trinity College Cambridge, Hyperion Records.
and his Phos Hilarion done by the Gesualdo Six, conducted by composer.

Listening to this young composer's work. I like his writing but am underwhelmed by the execution of it on Choral Works. The use of female singers does not work for me here. The G6 are much better on his Phos Hilarion, but atrocious elsewhere on the CD Fading, also by Hyperion. It is difficult not feel that there has been a change in the way of choral work is approached. The G6 version of When David heard That Absalom Was Dead is the worst I've come across - they can't even enunciate properly and hang on to syllables in a slovenly manner, each singer also appears to be vying with his peers for preminence. It isn't all bad but enough of it is sufficiently distressing to elicit foul language and the use of the eject button.

Came across this one in a charity shop in Sidmouth this morning. A piece I am not familiar with, perhaps I should be, so far it is rather stunning, full of emotion and passion, I believe the conductor is rather famous as well.

It's a Decca ffrr (full frequency range recording), so is mono. All Decca stereo recordings are marked ffss (full frequency stereo sound).

Having 10" LPs in your collection makes you look like you are a serious record collector, but are a bit of a bugger to file away as they get lost between their bigger 12" neighbours. (;))

Ah, I see... Cool.

Doesn't bother me really, as I have around 200 mono albums in my collection, of various musical genres, and the best recorded ones sound superior, musically, than many stereo recordings. Among other examples, the early Beatles albums are a case in point - sonically they're much more dynamic and 'alive' than their later stereo counterparts.

As far as 10" records go, I've got around 50 (mostly classical), as apart from anything else, I think they're dinky and kinda cool:)

While Miroirs is quite good (especially the 3rd movement), I mostly listen to the second side of this record - Le Tombeau de Couperin which is one of my favourite pieces of piano music ever.

Having just finished listening to Queffelec's Dutilleux CD I put on Monique Haas' 1968 recording of Le Tomebeau de Couperin, then I read your post....

I have no idea of the racial composition of the Choir of Salisbury Cathedral. Looking at the names of the choristers it is not obvious if any of them are "people of colour" - but I don't buy my records on the basis of the race, colour, gender, or sexual orientation of the performers.


As to the 'Missa Luba', this is part of the Mass (Kyrie, Gloria and Credo) performed in the style of a kasala, a song framework of the Ngandanajika (Kasai) of Congo. The Sanctus and Gloria are fashioned after 'The Song of Farewell' of the Kiluba, and the Agnus Dei is based on a song of the Bena Luba (Luluabourg).

The whole is performed by Les Troubadours du Roi Baudouin, a choir with a percussion section, consisting of about 45 boys from 9 to 14 years old, and 15 teachers from the Kamina School in the Congo.

Perhaps I should destroy this too for the lack of inclusivity: no female performers, no white performers? Or as an exploitative expropriation of African culture?

Sound quality and arrangements were top notch too, and sounded fabulous through the lounge system!

I've been listening to this on Qobuz for the past hour or so (and last night). Extremely good I think. SQ is excellent as is the music. Very open, clear and airy, allowing the "space" of the venue to shine through.

Highly recommended if you like Classical music.
