I was initially drawn to them as they reminded me of AR4xa's... If the cabinets were the same colour & they were local I'd try them but with that p&p I'll leave it to someone else.
You really ought to publish all this knowledge in a book Geoff, I'd probably buy a copy :lol:
The '303AX' were the later version James.
The AR4XA are a far better bet and you'd get a pair for about the same money. There've been a few pairs on eBay recently. I had some running with a Rogers Ravensbrook amp not that long ago and the combination sounded very sweet. The AR4XA is a very durable speaker, the doped cloth surround bass drivers just never seem to pack in and the little AR paper cone tweeter sounds decent. Don't forget, these were rated at 100 watts, even back then (early seventies).
KLH Model 9 is worth a look too.
:thumbsup: I got a *mint* pair of 4xa's locally from a retired BBC engineer for £5 a couple of years back, used them with a Marantz 2215b now that was a sweet little system I'd like to put back together !
Wouldn't mind trying a pair of 4xa's!! But they will have to be fitted with modern speaker terminals though!! I notice the 4xa's have a switch for increase etc, what does that do?
Much the same as MS Pageants, you can boost or cut the high frequencies. I recapped mine with Soviet PIO caps... Gawd they sounded silky smooth.
You should keep a second set of speaker cables just for old/oddball speakers, I've got some Van Damme 0.75mm that fits every vintage amp/receiver/speaker perfectly although only just in some cases !
