It looks as though the Volvo was HER car and she MIGHT let you use it if you ask nicely Alex
As a side question is that a solar trickle charger on the dashboard of the Volvo and if so was it any good?. I don't use my car very much and the battery is always going flat.

It does help, but it's many years old, new ones are better, buy as big a one as possible. I'm lucky, the cigarette lighter power socket is live all the time, so the charger plugs in there. Two different Volvo 340's there, dark colour one was replaced with the lighter one in 2011.
Have you checked the alternator charging voltage?
