Yep, it was a good position as you can see from my phone shot (funny how searching for cameras in concerts has disappeared since every phone is a camera) but unfortunately Ruth, who is only 5' 0", had a hard time seeing anything so had to sneak into the aisle for quick bursts of full vision.
I did miss the outstanding version of Welcome to the Machine that Waters did at the last gig I saw him at, it had some of the most extraordinarily gut-wrenching bass I've ever heard.
Martin, there's video of Comfortably Numb, with Dave from the 12/05 O2 show up on Roger's website at the moment - and his Facebook page apparently. Whets the appetite for a full DVD or Bluray release (apparently one of Rog's German shows was filmed for release, I assume that the bits of the O2 show that were filmed - only Comfortably Numb and Outside The Wall were - will likely as not end up as bonuses on that.

You were very lucky Martin, Gilmour was only ever going to do one night. My best friend managed to catch it too, so I am very pleased for him indeed - he needs some good luck at the moment. I went with him again last night and to be honest, I'm a little lost for words :scratch: I have been going to concerts for 38 years and I have never seen anything like that - absolute total audio/visual overload and by some significant margin, the best concert I have been too :stalks:Quote:

Glad you enjoyed it, Tim. Having seen the original Wall concert thirty years ago, I can say that this one was better because of better sound and far better visuals. However, I do miss Rick :(

For those of you who are interested how events like this are planned and staged, this months Total Production magazine features a 17 page in depth look into the technical and artisitc requirements needed to put this tour on the road. there are also plenty of back stage photos showing the equipment in use.
It can be read and downloaded online HERE (from page 28 onwards) and makes a good read if you have some spare time and like technical stuff.
For those of you who dont have the time, but want to appear knowledgable in the pub, here are some usefull snippets for you.
The production cost $10M and requires 25 trucks to move the kit.
The inflatable puppets cost $2M, twice the cost of the entire 1980s production.
The wall is 35' high and 240' wide and requires almost 400 bricks. Each brick is a flat pack, made from cardboard and is 5' x 2 1/2'. Bricks will last no more than 4 shows before they need to be replaced.
The stage occupies 3350 square feet.
The puppets are 9M tall and fully animated. Five minutes of movement for the teacher requires over 60 cues to operate the winches supporting the puppet.
The projections system beats the worlds largest Imax cinema by producing single high def images 240' wide with 8560 by 1620 resolution.
20 Barco projectors put out almost 500,000 lumens.
10 Apple Mac pros were used as a "render farm" for producing the animation.
750 pyros are used in the 20 second chase at the start of the show.
Sound is a Clair Brothers line array using JBL components. Amplification is Crown/Amcron Macro-Techs. Big heavy muscle amps designed 25 years ago.
Almost 130 channels of audio are used.
The main mix is analogue.

As many here probably know I go to quite a few gigs (19 so far this year), but have decided to only post here occasionally, as I'm sure you would get fed up of seeing my avatar! However, some deserve special mention and last night was one of them IMO. I have never seen Emmylou Harris before and to be honest have only really listened to her since Brokeback Mountain came out, as I loved her song in the film (A Love That Will Never Grow Old - Spotify). So I arrived with no preconceptions at all, but obliviously excited to be seeing a legend from the Country scene.
The show was sold out and it really looked it too, unusually I couldn't see a vacant seat in the house. The set was very minimal, with no backdrop as the choir seats at the rear were full as well. Just a drum kit, keyboard a collection of mic stands and two very small amplifier stacks. She was backed by the Red Dirt Boys and bounced on stage at the start, looking very sprightly and dare I say it rather hot!
Anyway, we got 1h 50m which covered a lot of favourites from over the years and I particularity liked the fact she talked to the crowd and told stories to explain her songs. The sound from where I sat was really good, but the hall helped a lot I'm sure. The best bit for me was when she sang solo in the middle of the set, when the band left her on stage - you could really hear her voice at this point and like her music or not, I think she has one of the most beautiful voices in modern music.
A fantastic night and I felt very privileged to have been able to enjoy it, Emmylou's appearances are few and far between over here and at 64 she may be getting close to calling it a day - mind you, judging by last nights performance, that doesn't look like it's going to be anytime soon.

She also did one of the best performances of Hallelujah I have seen. I'm a confirmed fan now and will try to see her whenever I can.

Along with some other AoS members I saw Mud Morganfield with a backing band at the Victoria Hotel, Menai, Anglesey, last Sunday.
As you might imagine from his name Mud Morganfield is Muddy Waters’s son. This concert was a long time coming; having been previously cancelled owing to ill health of the organiser. However in the end the concert was able to go ahead.
In the past Mud Morganfield’s backing band has been ‘The Dirty Aces’ a four-piece consisting of: Giles Robson, on harmonica and occasional vocals; Fillp Kozlowski, on electric guitar; Paul Bisson, on electric bass, and Tim Bryron drums.
For this concert ‘The Mud Morganfield Band’ consisted of Steve ‘West’ Weston on harmonica and occasional vocals, a guitarist from Denmark whose name I missed, bassist on upright bass and drummer. Again, unfortunately I missed their names as well (!) It was nice to see, and hear upright string bass used – shades of Willy Dixon!
Before the Big Man came on his backing band played a couple of numbers. I was very impressed by the harpist who didn’t have a bad blues singing voice. The guitarist was an accomplished blues guitarist and certainly had the technical capability, though I found his ‘touch’ rather heavy. However it is churlish of me to be too critical as I am unable to play any musical instrument at all – though I used to play on the linoleum as a small boy.

It is always difficult being the son of a world famous musician and clearly Mud Morganfield had a lot to live up to. Rather than simply doing covers of his father’s numbers, Mud sang a mixture of his own compositions as well as some of his father's numbers.
We were sat near the back of the function room that was seating about 100, and the set up of the PA of the backing band was sufficient and well balanced. However the gain of Mud’s microphone was too high and whilst not distorting, caused the speakers to ‘shout’ on vocals to the detriment of vocal articulation. After a couple of numbers the soundsman was able to improve matters by adjusting levels, but not before losing the harp microphone channel, and at one time the whole of the PA!
Whilst I enjoyed the concert overall, the highlights for me were Mud’s cover versions of ‘Mannish Boy’ and ‘Forty Days and Forty Nights’, which is more or less what I expected.
After seeing my poor efforts at concert photography you are probably glad I haven’t show any photographs of my accompanying AoS members. Well I wouldn’t have taken any anyway for the following reasons. Chris (codename The Grand Wazoo) is a high level officer in MUDSHARK, a clandestine organisation whose covert activities are to fulfil an avowed mission to secrete copies of Frank Zappa’s work into every lending library in the land. As such an important member, his identity must be kept secret. And Marco is, as everyone knows, nosferatu or one of the un-dead who cannot have their likeness captured on film. Shame, as he was dressed for the occasion: wearing a tight-fitting black turtle-neck sweater and black tights with a carmine pink Ra Ra skirt and matching shoes.
All in all and excellent and thoroughly enjoyable evening: convivial company and some excellent beer available at the bar.
Superb Barry - you're a comedy genius in waiting! ;) (Or if Marco has his way, a lady in waiting!)
Off to see Journey tonight (in a hour) who are promoting their new album Ecl1pse. Foreigner and FM are the support groups.
Journey are quite a bit heavier these days so I am not sure about the new album. However I love the older material and this may well be my one and only chance to see them live.

So many bands do festivals during the summer it kind of dies a death for local giging at this time of year.
I saw Gomez last night at the HMV institute in Birmingham, it was great. plenty of old favourites, a few new ones I didn't know... The sound was great, as was the atmosphere, it was sweltering in there though!Quote:

I've just got back from a fantastic Ron Sexsmith gig. An absolutely brilliant performance in a fantastic funky old venue - the Holmfirth Picturedrome, with a really good audience.
It does happen, but very rarely in my experience, that a crowd are so appreciative that a band come back on-stage again to do a second round of encores. Tonight was one of those nights.

Just back from Custom House Square in Belfast. We were at the Coors Light Open house festival, where we saw The Low Anthem, Villagers and Fleet Foxes in the same evening back to back! I now have aching feet, a sore neck and ringing ears! (we were at the very front).
All of the bands were outstanding ( I had only recently heard of Villagers and The Low Anthem but had got some of their music before hand) and though I have seen Fleet Foxes before they still rocked! The Low Anthem were very good too, and Villagers were just bloody brilliant!

I went to see Isobel campbell & Mark Lanegan tonight in Manchester Cathedral. It was turning out to be a great gig and much anticipated. What a venue too!
Unfortunately about 2/3rds of the way through the set, the fire alarms went off & everyone had to leave the building. So audience and band were mooching around outside for a while chatting and ignoring the security folks telling everyone to move further away from the building, band members running around taking photos of the fire brigade arriving and a fun time was had by all.
The fire turned out to be a toaster in an adjacent room and after it was unplugged, a jug of water was applied - while it was solemnly stood round by several gents in protective clothing!
Once the scare was all over, the decision was made by the management that the gig would not continue, so it turned into a bit of a let down really!
What we did see was really good though.
Why the hell didn't it continue? The source of the 'fire' had been identified and made safe, so what was the problem? I'd have been livid. :steam:Quote:
