Got a bit of Dexter Gordon on now. Okay, so plinky plonk like this will flatter any system but even so...I think I just upgraded a couple of notches. :) I like that they sound completely out of the box and just paint a big soundstage down the end of the room. I suppose it helps that they are so tall and the midrange driver is at the top of the array, although it angles down a little.

Anyway they have been far from a disappointment so far. Rest of system probably needs upgrading to match them, LOL. What can you do? The budget is done in for this year :)

What's the sensitivity of those Martin?

Claims 91dB in the manual. They seem noticeably less sensitive than the Akai SW175 which claim 96dB.

I'm sure they would sound rather wonderful with one of my class A 50WPC amps but it ain't cheap I'm afraid... Only one in existence is my own and no immediate plans to sell any as I need to get the ball rolling with some more affordable gear for now.. I was able to make a prototype for my own use from parts I had in stock and others removed from older prototypes etc, it isn't cased up and just covers about a 2" square area of floor atm. It has 12X 22000uf smoothing caps, twin 400VA transformers, separate regulated supplies for the driver stages and 3 pairs of 15A mosfets per channel. To make one that also looked the part in a nice case and was made from all new components would cost me about £500-£700 just for the parts... and imagine the postage for trying a demo unit:eek: I have valve hybrid driver electronics designed and built to replace the present SS circuitry when I get round to it. It's all on my trade area pages.

I bet those JM Labs are erm... rather a step up from those Akai tea chests! You'll have to upgrade everything now to match the resolution of the new speakers! Upgraditis therapy probably required:lol:

That's about the same as my Cheviot II speakers if I recall. The SM-70 Pro '25 watt' power amp drives mine very effectively, get some serious and tight wallop out of them. Plus great sound quality.

Well sort of. The JM labs are much more modern hi-fi. The Akais have their own charms which, although you may mock ;) ,are considerable when it comes down to just enjoying music.

I've not heard a pair of those as far as I can remember, but I can guess more or less what they sound like having heard a few other Japanese speakers of similar type. Plenty of presence and a beefy, tight bass. Good fun! The Goodmans Magister can do this too.

You're not sat 20 foot from the speakers in a 30' room though. 25 watts isn't enough to get the clean levels I want. I know from experience that 50w is a minimum, which is why I use the XTZ, also it doesn't mind low loads.

No I'm not, but 50 watts is only 3db louder than 25 watts, barely noticeable. Trust me the Monarchy packs a punch. Shame you're not nearer, I'd show you.

The XTZ is 110 watts/8 ohms - so 6dB louder ;) I used to clip a 50W Linn LK100 on peaks into 90 dB speakers. I've never heard the XTZ clip. The speakers give in first. The traffo is the size of a watermelon.
