I did keep back the Michell deck & my ELP, King Crimson albums but just for keep sake nothing else..
My front end is the Micromega CD & FLAC files from outboard hard drive..I use HRT to bypass laptop sound card..Sounds great

I know exactly what you mean - there are some truly awful pressings around on vinyl, past and present. What clinches it for me though, is when vinyl delivers (and by that I mean a superbly recorded 'clean' pressing of great music), it is truly awesome and for me surpasses anything digital is capable of. Fortunately, I've got a few such examples in my collection :)Quote:

The other thing I'd say, and you're probably going to disagree with me here, is that the type of classic belt-drive T/Ts you seem to favour (and their often 'loose', 'mushy' sonic signature), in my experience, merely highlight the same characteristics present in some of the vinyl pressings you're referring to.
With a top-notch direct-drive T/T, like for example an SP10 (or even an idler like a Garrard), the presentation is much tighter, 'cleaner' and ultimately more accurate, (in effect, they impose less of their 'character' on the music), thus enabling them to 'cut through the mire' of some of the rather dark sounding 60s/70s prog rock recordings you enjoy listening to.
That for me is mainly why you were never happy with vinyl - so don't give up on it completely, just get a better T/T! ;)
Having said that, the streaming solution you mention is no doubt excellent, as I know myself what is possible sonically in that area. Ultimately though, I just find it a rather soulless and un-tactile way of accessing one's music collection. I guess that I'd rather have shelves stacked full of albums I actually own that are worth something, as opposed to (financially) worthless, 'faceless' files stored on a hard-drive...

I hear what your sayin..Actually i've had a couple of Garrard '401' & the Idler/Belt Thorens 'TD124' These do sound a lot better than Belt drives, one particular aspect about the Garrard is the bass compared to Belt drive base, like night & day. I'm sorry to say that i have given up on vinyl..I'm probably in a worse postion than most Vinyl fans in the respect that i listern to Early Prog around 1968-'73 nothing else the issues around this time were largely medicore. I do on the otherhand find the CD issues a hell of a lot better although as you mentioned loosing a touch of body within the sound..
You can't have it all ways i say. The bonus point for me is that even though the Micromega CDP is a tad bright & slightly over detailed, i find the Vintage QUAD gear kind irons this out taking the edge off the sound a bit which gives me a more vinyl like presentation..I'm happy with it regardless of how dated the units may look, infact i'd stick my neck out & say it's the happiest i've been for a long while.
btw: The Michell 'Hydraulic' was bought because of my fascination for both the late '60's/early '70's & the Clockwork Orange movie...Shame it aint a Transcriptors deck but it's as close as damn it.. ;)
