He was good in the Beiderbeck Series and When the Boat Comes In, but wasnt overly enamoured at his other stuff bar likely lads. 'Ender's Game' 2013
I don't know what the original pitch for this film was, but 'Starship Troopers crossed with Harry Potter' is probably not far off. Which sounds promising but instead it is one of those films where the entire plot and ending is entirely predictable almost from the off. Harrison Ford tries really hard, but when even Han Solo can't save the situation, you know you've got a lot of trouble on that ship.
And can someone explain why it is 2013 and CGI in sci-fi films still looks like they just put in some animation shots? Why is it that in 2001: A Space Odyssey does it look like they went into space and filmed a space station when similar shots in this film look like an early 'Nineties arcade game? 44 years separates one from the other.

Never got Superman. Too powerful. always with the Kryptonite. At least Batman is mortal. But for me Batman is always the TV show with Adam West, not the comic books, or the films.

Sometimes those sort of films can be clever and funny, like 'The Incredibles' - you never know.

Which was clearly unusual to me. Yet, even more curiously, that fudd claimed he knew the names of All the 'actors' on his Screen. And took pains to inform one and all.
This boggled my 12 yr old mind as to Why anybody would even want to know.
Meaning nothing.. other than the preceding postings triggered that memory
Things are different now but back in the 1970s, in England, in the winter, there was not much else to do other than stop in and watch telly or go out to the pub. Obviously if you were too young to go to the pub that left one option.
In any case, knowing who played who in the Carry On films should really be compulsory learning in schools. Even in Canada. In fact, especially in Canada ;)
Someone once suggested (on a comedy show, I think) that films should have subtitles to remind you what else the actors have been in, to prevent whispering in the cinema. Nowadays, on DVD cases, they actually include the titles of other films the actors have been in. Dunno what they do if it's the actor's debut role.Quote:

I rarely go to the cinema these days. Apparently, when I was a nipper me and my sisters used to go to a local makeshift cinema known as 'the fleapit' every week. I have absolutely no recollection of going there, what it looked like, or what films we saw (mainly cartoons, according to my sisters). What's equally bizarre is that I have no memory of going to church on the first Friday of every month, which I must have done for ten or more years.
Your fragile child mind must have blotted out the experience. Not surprising in the case of church. I still credit church and latin lessons for instilling in me a quite amazing capacity to tolerate long periods of intense boredom.

Martian Chronicles - TV series from the late 70s. Recall enjoying this at the time, but not seen it in years.

Went to see 'Jason Bourne' today, better than the one he wasn't in.
Is it still Matt Damon running around unconvincingly and nothing else that will remain in your memory for more than a minute?
Don't get me wrong the original 3 are watchable. None are as good as Under Siege though, to set some sort of benchmark.

I liked it Tim. Very well acted too, with top stars all enjoying themselves, but you do feel an air of reverance to the old series too.
Feel you maybe need to watch it twice to get it, as first time your a bit nonplused about it all, as everyone is strange.
Maybe I'll try again, but I just couldn't relate to Capt. Mainwaring, Arthur Lowe was peerless in the role and that was my main reason for giving up.

Star Wars, the first movie in the pre-special edition theatrical version on non-anamorphic DVD. Looks a bit dotty and fuzzy blown up on the 100" screen but it's still an impressive spectacle. The original 'Dolby Surround' soundtrack stands up pretty well, too.
Keep meaning to get hold of a copy of that. I have the special edition but hate the idiotic 'improvements'. The original version is a classic.

Bruce Willis is a retired CIA agent - blah blah - good cast with Morgan Freeman, John Malkovitch, Helen Mirren, Karl Urban. Starts out as a serious spy thriller then gets a little silly. I wondered if it didn't start out as a more serious, quite dark film, but at some point someone decided to pour sub Ocean's Eleven faux-cool on the thing, including on the soundtrack, which means it ends up being neither one thing or the other.
In short, it is not as good as Under Siege. But just the sight of Helen Mirren in a ballgown continuously firing a .50 calibre machine gun means it is worth a watch.
There's talk (but that's all it seems to be at the moment) that the original theatrical trilogy may be on its way to blu-ray. I'm fairly relaxed about these things, generally and the 'latest' special editions are fabulous on blu-Ray even with Lucas' changes. The fuzziness of the DVD was occasionally distracting, (they were produced from the letterbox laserdisc master apparently and I'm sure they'd look splendid on a big 4:3 CRT) but it was nice to see it in its original form.Quote:

Thoroughly gripping - some of the tech is hyped up for dramatic purposes (although some of it not that far from reality) -- but the questions of the morality of remote warfare and potential for collateral damage is the real heart of the film. Excellent stuff, and Alan Rickman is excellent in his last on screen role.
Back to the future (1985) original film that started the legend. Superb stuff all the way with Michael J Fox and Chris Lloyd
