I had a 1980's bottle of the Glenlevit 12, it was an amazing 12 year old , unlike the Glenlevit 12 you get today.
A friend of mine is not much of a drinker and lives next to a golf course, I helped him put up a 20ft. x 55 ft. safety net on a cable and it was cold, he pulled out a bottle Crown Royal and behind it was the Glenlevit, I asked how old is that bottle as the label was very different and he said the 80's. Would you like some? Yes, please. It was so much better than todays 12 year old offering by the same distillery.
Sad how much the quality has suffered in 40 years.
Older whiskies around that time used paxarette to season casks. Was due to the Spanish cask ban.

well using paxarette was the way to produce sherry casks really in 19th century on through 20th. they brought over loads of american oak staves and built barrels then injected via compressed air, the pax. a cup or 2 ar a time. this gave you that rich sherry flavours of older whisky. As its an additive it is BANNED!!!! lol. You can still buy pax in Spain tho and do it yourself:eyebrows:

Caramel leads to fruit, peaches I think. Some pepper and oaky heat at end, with more fruits appearing.

This is a really nice scotch the Tomatain 12 is so good I'll be looking for a 15,16 or 18.
I do think it has some artificial color, as the taste is more floral and citrus. The color would suggest an older scotch with darker fruits but it is far from disappointing.
Sticks pretty well to the glass.

Non age statment scotch is the direction most distillerys are moving in. Even some of there more expensive bottles are blended with older whiskeys barrels mixed in with more youthful

Tonight I'm back on the Loch Lomond Inchmurrin Maderia finish. A little smoke in the middle of this. Fruity as you'd expect and a nice finish. Nice and warming on a cold dreichit night.

The Revival is the first expression released from Glenglassaugh distillery after being mothballed for more than 20 years. The Glenglassaugh Revival has been matured in a balanced mix of ex-red wine and fresh bourbon casks, vatted and re-racked for double maturation in rich sherry casks. Bottled at 46%, non chill filtered and of natural colour, Revival is a stunning Highland single malt with a coastal charm.
Nose: Sweet caramel and toffee with notes of nutty sherry, milk chocolate and honey. Ripe plums, red berries and oranges. Caramelised sugar and earthy, charred oak.
Palate: Sweet, rounded and creamy. Oranges, plums, cherry and walnuts, chocolate, honey-mead, sherry and soft, spiced oak.
Finish: Medium with warming mulled-wine spices, sherry and caramel

I was thinking about the Dalmore 12, I keep hearing,get anything else it is the Bose wave of scotch.
So, I listened and I think they jumped the shark with the cigar malt .
They are always marketing them selves as exclusive and upscale,like a 1980's Cadillac under all the chrome and plastic wood grain was a poorly designed, engineered,under powered and overpriced Chevy costing more than a Mercedes that actually was dependable, looked better and fit in one parking spot.
They are marketed like P.T.Barnum, Heavily Carmel colored, chill filtered and sold at 40%.
With an electro plated plastic deer head on the bottle.
Yet, I still think I'll get a bottle just to see for my self.
Even though I know the money could be better spent on a nice Deanston or Glensomething.
Has anyone else bought something they knew they would most likely be disappointed with?
I mean it's not like taking a trans gender on a date, but it is not likely to be something I like but I keep seeing bottles of it and it seems to haunt me.
Or maybe I can act like Richard Patterson pour it in a glass,swirl it around and throw it on the floor to clean the glass then fill it with Glenfarclas and drink it!
Any thoughts guys? Any disappointing bottles?
Not tried either Jeff. I've a bottle of the Dominium and I've had a bottle of 15yr old, which was nice enough, tho maybe slightly expensive, it was a malt that grew on u. Hence the Dominium which I got on offer to try, as its nearing a hundred quid normallyQuote:

Finished in a combination puncheons and hogsheads that previously held Pedro Ximénez and Oloroso sherry, this 15 yr old from Glenallachie is dark, rich and rather nice.. comes in at a nice 46% as well.
beautifully balanced with oddles of raisins, spices and more christmas cake than you can shake a big stick at. nice long finish too.
Possibly the darkest malt I've had, even darker than Edradour.

yeah i think i will explore glenallachie more thoroughly... Billy Walker, master distiller, ex of BenRiach, GlenDronach and Glenglassaugh is doing excellent work... top man.
This is a Linkwood 10yr old bottled at 46% by James Eadie. Aged in recharred hogsheads gives big bourbon notes of Vanilla, Caramel and Berry fruits.
Lovely rich, strong and juicy dram this from one of the best distilleries around. Alas the blenders know this and most of it goes into blends.
Personally I think a small drop of water improves this.

Inchmurrin madeira wood finish. 46%.. a slight bit of smoke mingles with caramel, fruits and some nice spices.
