Gosh, that's the polar opposite of my upbringing (when I read what Macca wrote, my feeling was :eek:), I guess being an only child made a big difference, especially in an Italian family, as they're very close to and protective of their kids.

It does sound rather cold and distant, though... My parents and I were always very close. If I'd built something like that (which would've been unlikely, as I wasn't really wired that way), the first reaction from my dad would've been one of shock, for reasons just mentioned, then he would've undoubtedly said 'Well done', and given me a big hug!:)

It does sound that way, but it's just the way it was. Being independent like that probably means I learned to make my own breakfast sooner than you learned to make poo poo in the toilet :ner: Mummy's boy :D

Lol, and no 'pity' intended, mate - far from it. Just pointing out the difference:)

Don't think I made my own breakfast until I got married, lol! That's just what mum did, along with all the cooking, washing and ironing. Yes, when I was young, I was very much a 'mummy's boy', that's not necessarily what I would've wanted, just how it was.

I didn't really 'grow up' until I went to secondary school.

Apart from the "essentials" (feeding and clothing us), for the most part parental involvement was neither given nor required. I didn't need them to compliment me on my Meccano/Lego creations, nor help me to focus my microscope. And I needed no assistance when making and using weapons - I had mates for that. And when I turned nine mum brought us up alone, so she was a bit busy holding things together, not helped by the breakdown and being sectioned for two months.

But a couple of years later she took up with (and married) an old friend, and it was all good from there :)

I think I'm actually less handy round the house (cooking cleaning and ironing) than I ever used to be, but that's just because Mrs. P prefers to do it all herself, as I don't do it right ;)

lol I can't imagine that. If my father had ever hugged me I'd have thought he had lost his mind.

I think the only time I ever impressed him was when I gave him a demo of my 5.1 A/V system. He was still talking about that years later.

We were never one of those 'touchy feely' families. Talking about that with my brothers some time ago now and we all agreed that would have been awful. There was love and respect of course but none of us ever felt the need to openly demonstrate or verbalise it. I was very fond of my father, I took his death very hard.

Lol - just different cultures, mate. Hot-blooded, fiery and passionate Italians are BORN to be 'touchy-feely'. How much hugging went on in the Sopranos?:D;)

Glad your dad was impressed with your AV system - that was cool... And yes, I'm sure his death hit you hard.
