Yesterday my partner and I were looking at gold necklaces in the local jewellers. They are agents for inter alia Rolex, and are where I go to have my watch serviced.
Whilst she looked at gold necklaces, I looked at the Rolex watches. My goodness, Rolex have let their fame go to heads and are now producing watches with some of the most vulgar cosmetics around! I then looked at the Omega watches and even the most complicated diver's chronometer had much more style than the Rolex offerings. Same too with Longines and (ahem) Tudor. Not only much cheaper, but obviously without the 'Veblen' association.
It was neither the strap/bracelet nor the case I found vulgar, it was the hideous designs of the dial face and of the markings: such as the use of diamonds for the hours, or the use of Roman numerals which are disproportionate in size with respect to that of the facia.
I also find the repeated "ROLEX" marked around the edge of the dial (not sure the correct term for it) unnecessary and 'bling'. (I know it has been introduced as an anti-forgery measure but to my mind it looks ugly.)
Put simply present day Rolex watches lack the elegance and style of yesteryear.

I don't find this too intrusive on my two recent models.

yes Barry not keen on the newer subs either , I’m trying to trade my way up to a birth year 66 5513 , I prefer the classic “Steve McQueen” no date window sub , I traded a Blancpain Aqua Lung for the Sub as I just didn’t bond with it due to its size I think mainly, it looked tiny on my wrist

Found this amongst some bits in the loft a few weeks back, was intrigued when I saw swiss made on the dial, flipped it over and it's made by Mondaine who make the swiss railway watches. Popped a new battery in it and away it went! (think I bought it in Debenhams about 30 years ago, looks like it's seen some action)
