He died in 1952. Lightoller's son advised Kenneth More on how to play his father and his widow visited the set (and More) to observe the filming.

Tonight its Kelly's Heroes (1970), starring Clint Eastwood, Donald Sutherland, Telly Savalas, Don Rickles and scene stealer Carroll O'Connor. Filmed in and around Yugoslavia, Serbia, Croatia etc by Gabriel Figueroa who also did Two Mules with Eastwood, and directed by Brian Hutton who also did Where Eagles Dare.
This film follows the escapades of a group of soldiers, lead by Kelly(Eastwood) and Big Joe(Savalas), as they deviate slightly from the grand war strategy and take a detour behind enemy lines to steal a bankload of gold, believing that if they are gonna get shot at and killed, they may as well make some cash out of it. Hey, Business is business I hear Macca saying ;) ... and OPur own Anto saying I dig those positive waves man:D

George Cukor's "My Fair Lady" from 1964 is tonight's film. Not seen it for a while but listened to the soundtrack last week.
Starring Audrey Hepburn, Rex Harrison, Stanley Holloway, Jeremy Bret and Wilfrid Hyde-White Star in this fabulous musical, originally written as a play by G B Shaw and written for the screen by the great A J Lerner.
... Marni Nixon sang a fair amount of Hepburn's parts even though she was a good enough singer, but not all as some said; you can actually tell easily when you tune in your ear, and I actually preferred Hepburn's voice although she obviously didnt have the range.
Harrison was originally unamused that Hepburn got the role, as he wanted someone who was uncomfortable in the fancy ballroom scenes,(think Julie Andrews was his choice) stating the Hepburn has spent most of her life in ball-gowns, which is a stretch tbh. Still he did admit later that she was his favourite leading lady

John Ford & Henry Hathaways' 1962 sweeping western saga; "How The West Was Won" starring James Stewart, John Wayne, Gregory Peck, Henry Fonda, George Peppard and Debbie Reynolds as stand outs in a stand out cast of biblical proportions. Spencer Tracy I think did the voice overs and apart from the main cast there were more than 12,000 extras employed in the film.. Still holds its head hight today after 54 years.

Great film and although not always accurate, it does go along at a decent pace and keeps your attention with some great acting. Not sure about the motorbike stuff, and was probably put in to keep McQueen happy.
A tribute to wee Angus Lennie who played the mole and died last year. He was well known in Scotland as 'Sunny Jim' in the superb Para Handy Series, and was also the cook Shughie McFee in Crossroads during the seventies.

Watched 'The Dirty Dozen' again last night. Thoroughly enjoyed that. Some excellent actors in it, with Lee Marvin on top form.
Forever young (1992) starring Mel Gibson in a less action man role. The georgous at the time, Jamie Lee Curtis is the romantic piece and Elijah Wood the boy who ties them...
The B-25J seen in this film is known as "Photo Fanny" and is located at the Planes of Fame Museum in Chino, California.

'Kick Ass' got recommended to me by a few people but I thought it was just a stupid kid's film so nearly didn't bother - it is actually really good with some great Tarantino-esque moments.
'Rise Of The Planet Of The Apes': A slow starter and it is one of these 'middle of the franchise' films so all it is doing is setting the stage for the next one so you are always going to be ahead of the plot. Impressive CGI, though.
The old versions are more fun I think, albeit a bit tackier (especially after Beneath The Planet of The Apes when the budgets gets cut back dramatically).
Ice cold in Alex from 1958 and starring Johnny Mils and Tony Quayle; both to become "Sirs", and Sylvia Syms, Harry Andrews and Aussie Allan Cuthbertson.

Just watched Tom Selleck in 'Night Passage' a Jesse Stone series made for TV movie from the US on Channel 5.
Great stuff. Brilliantly cast and beautifully acted and directed (by Selleck). There are a handful of these intelligently put together Jesse Stone movies and they are very classy. The atmosphere is moody and dark and the pace might be described by some as slow, but I call it measured. The characterisations are superb and although the dramatic action is sparse, it is very decisive and has great impact. Love it.
(I have the Jesse Stone movies in my DVD collection, but always watch them when on the box)

Bear Island from 1979 with Donald Sutherland. Not a bad film this and supposed to be the first in a sequence of Alistair MacLean adaptations. Alas it flopped and they never got made by producer Peter Snell.

Tonight we are taking a comedic look at a POW camp , and the getting back to Blighty, of a VERY IMPORTANT PERSON(1961); namely James Robertson Justice, a Scientific Boffin that accidentially got sucked out of a bomber over Germany and Winston Churchill wants back at any cost.
Directed by Ken Annakin of The Battle of the Bulge fame(and also did Those Magnificent Men in Their Flying Machines)..... and also starring a who's who of British comedy, it is one of the most stellar casts possible in a comedy drama and VIP delivers comedic gold by the spadeful.
John Le Mesurier, Richard Wattis, Eric Sykes, Leslie Phillips, Stanley Baxterand Jeremy Lloyd, who went into writing shows like Are you Being Served and Allo Allo.
Stanley Baxter plays the dual roles of prisoner Jock Everett and Kommondant Stamfel. his wonderful reply to Stamfel's line calling him an "English Swine" was "Scottish Swine"
James Robertson Justice was a tremendous linguist and spoke, among others, fluent German, and ad libbed a line in German to antagonise the Commandant, which translates as " You can kiss my arse, you filthy Nazi " . This, if known would never have been allowed, by either the director/studios, or got past the censors mindful of insulting Germans etc. Justice was on safe ground as no one spoke any German and he got away with his bit of revenge. JRJ always claimed to be Scottish, but he wasn't (Born and died in London actually).
This is one of the last of the great British comedies before the world changed, and it is as fresh today as it ever was. If you get the chance to watch it again, DO!!

Occupied - Sky Arts
A Norwegian drama/thriller about a joint EU and Russian take over of Norway. Norway now ruled by a green party has switched all her oil and gas production off, in favour of a new clean source of power. Russia and the EU demand a turn back on, which is ignored, and Russia leads a takeover of the oil and gas fields.
Interesting idea and so far well executed, but it does suffer from the usual Scandinavian reserve, dead pan flat, matter of fact presentation, so has lacked the tension and dramatic story telling it really needs. If you don't mind this then well worth watching.
