Probably my favourite Soft Machine LP. Chosen because most of the tracks on this double LP were composed by Mike Ratledge, who sadly died a few days ago, age 81.

More 'quirky' and less jazzy than 'Third', Volume Two is a classic of the Canterbury sound with its imaginative combination of pop, prog, nonesense rhyme and puns.

Did I say I didn't like "Us + Them"? I don't remember. I dont really like his solo stand-alone titles: "Pros and Cons of Hitchiking"; "Radio Kaos"' etc. - they don't capture my attention, or they are far too miserable.
My apologies Barry, you said the exact opposite really (post #31253) :doh: I hate it when my memory lets me down :( The only solo studio album I have is "Is this the Life we really want?", which I quite like, but I've no plans to try his other albums. The Jam - Sound Affects; one of my favourite Jam albums - I'll play it today in memory of Rik Buckler (The Jam drummer) who died yesterday. I met him a few times over the years and I must say, what a great down to earth guy!!

Most famous for "Slipping into Something" (Comfortable or otherwise) I love all of Kinobe's early works, but this, their second album, is probably my favourite. The opening track "Butterfly" is one of my top songs of all time, with a beautiful vocal by Victoria Horn, who seems to have done precious else, which is a shame (although she does backing vocals on "Summer in the Studio" also on this album, based on a sample of "Summer in the City" by The Lovin' Spoonful.)
An essential downtempo/chillout album in my view if you don't already have it - the early 2000's was the pinnacle of the chillout genre in my humble opinion.
