Did some vinyl trading yesterday at my favourite record shop, Clock Tower Music in Bridport, was great to get out again and look at some records. I asked for some recommendations from the owner, Roy, and this was one of them, it is a rather excellent concept album about the Apollo 8 landing written and recorded by a Bass player form Seaton, Devon. I had a listen in the shop and decided it was rather good, on listening at home I am rather pleased with it, in places a bit like weather report, also one or two famous musicians perform on the album.

Another recommended album care of Roy, I completely missed this one in my youth, even though I did listen to Canned Heat of which Harvey Mandel was a member.
This is a classic blues/rock album, Harvey's guitar playing on it is just stunning, he has a very distinctive style, I would thoroughly recommend this one. If you don't know it Grant give it a listen.

Played this one yesterday. When I did my vinyl trading the other day this was recommended to me, I am not usually a jazz band listener but the music shop owner put on a copy so I could have a quick listen, it is quite avant-garde in terms of its composition edging towards free jazz in places but is very good overall. On the liner notes the tracks on the album it says they are actually carefully shortened versions of selected 8 parts of 15 from a 2 hour suite called 'Pastoral'. Musically it is very surprising in that it flows from one feel(feeling) to another utilising different style and aspect of all the instruments to great effect, sometimes it can be even abrasive but then musically resolves to where it goes next. I believe that Mike Westwood is well recognised in his major contribution to Jazz, even though I was not aware of him. A good buy IMO and one I would recommend to others to give it a listen

One of the most exquisite Jazz albums I know of, sublime playing, it sounds so laid back and relaxed, but that's misleading with the Bossa nova and Latin rhythms driving it along.

I have listened to this album twice through now and IMHO I think is a must have for any Jazz lover, musically it is stunning and varied and the musicianship is sublime, Jazz at its best.

1959 was seminal year for Jazz recordings: Mingus 'Ah Um'; Miles Davis 'Kind of Blue' and Dave Brubeck 'Time Out'. And they were all issued on the Columbia label as well.Quote:

Some songs have a rock n' roll feel but are still very bluesy. A brilliant album IMO.
