I couldn't agree more!! And also your point about the work REAL bin men used to do. We've always had coal fires, so the metal bins they collected from the back of the house (and slung over their shoulders) were also full of spent coal and ash! Lazy fucks now...
As you say, now we've to turn our homes into mini (unpaid) 'recycling stations'. and separate out everything for them in neat little 'piles', even though we pay through the nose for said 'service' in Council Tax - where exactly does that money go...??
We have one of those 'trolleys' on wheels, with individual compartments (stacked plastic boxes) for cardboard and paper, plastics and cans, and glass, which we have to wheel down our rather long driveway, along with a separate black bin and a small grey recycling bin, for all food wastage. We also have two green bins for garden refuse, as we have a large garden.
It can certainly be 'fun', shlepping that lot down to the bottom of the road when they're full (for collection the following day) in the wind and pissing rain!!:D:doh:
